What is squalane and how is it different from squalene?
Squalene is a naturally occurring compound in skin sebum and in some plant and marine sources. Squalane is a hydrogenated (stabilised) form of squalene that is more shelf-stable for cosmetic use. Squalane does not go rancid, is odourless, and absorbs efficiently without a greasy feel.
Will squalane clog my pores?
Squalane is rated as non-comedogenic — it does not clog pores. It is one of the few oils suitable for oily and acne-prone skin, as it mimics the skin's natural lipids without disrupting sebum balance.
Can I use this as my only moisturiser?
For very dry or normal skin, squalane alone can provide sufficient moisture. Oily skin users may find even a small amount sufficient. However, those with very dry skin may benefit from layering a humectant (like hyaluronic acid toner) underneath before applying squalane.
Is 500 ml practical for home use?
Yes — squalane is stable and does not expire quickly when stored correctly. At 2–3 drops per daily use on the face, 500 ml provides well over a year's supply. It is also versatile enough to use on hair, body, and cuticles, making the large size very economical.
How does squalane compare to argan or rosehip oil?
Squalane is lighter, more stable, and non-comedogenic compared to argan or rosehip. It lacks the vitamins and fatty acids of those oils but is significantly better tolerated by acne-prone and oily skin types.
