It sits between the two. A traditional Japanese lotion is watery and is patted in first for hydration; a serum is a more concentrated treatment step. This gel essence-lotion is thicker than a watery lotion but lighter than a serum, so most people use it as their main hydration step after cleansing and before a separate serum or moisturiser. If your routine already has a rich cream, this can be the lighter layer underneath it.
What does the gel texture change in practice?
A gel holds on the skin a little longer than a splash lotion, which some people find more comfortable on dry or tight skin because it does not evaporate as fast. It also layers cleanly — it does not pill under most serums and creams. Texture is personal, so if you dislike anything with slip, a watery lotion may suit you better.
Does it contain fragrance or alcohol?
