Description

Lactis Lactic Acid Bacteria Fermentation Extract — 10 ml × 30 Sachets

Overview

Lactis is sold in Japan by B&S Corporation as 乳酸菌生成エキス — a lactic acid bacteria fermentation extract. Sixteen strains of lactic acid bacteria are used to ferment soy milk, the culture is then aged for a year, during which the bacteria die and break down, and only the resulting liquid is extracted. What is in the sachet is therefore the fermentation products and the broken-down cell material — not live bacteria.

B&S describes the approach as supporting the conditions for the bacteria a person already has, rather than introducing new ones. That is the maker's framing of what the product is, and this page no longer goes beyond it. Until today it listed eight specific effects as things "the Japanese manufacturer reports" — B&S publishes none of them, and they have been removed rather than rewritten. The panel, the ingredients and the storage instruction below are B&S's own. See our other Japanese supplements.

Key Benefits

  • ✓ Thirty individually sealed 10 ml sachets, 300 ml in total — one to two a day, per B&S
  • ✓ No live cultures, so nothing has to survive stomach acid and nothing needs refrigeration
  • ✓ Three ingredients in total: the fermentation extract, citric acid and lactic acid
  • ✓ 0.5 kcal per sachet, with zero fat and zero sugars on B&S's declared panel
  • ✓ Every raw material is plant-derived; casein-free, with no milk ingredient, sugar, colour, fragrance or preservative
  • ✓ Made at B&S's own GMP-certified health-food plant in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka, and shipped by us from Kobe

Who Is This For?

  • Someone who has tried live-culture products and wants a different approach — this one contains no live bacteria at all
  • People avoiding dairy: the base is soy, the product is casein-free and B&S declares no milk ingredient
  • Anyone who wants the daily habit to be portable — a sealed 10 ml stick needs no spoon, no fridge and no measuring
  • Buyers who read declarations: three ingredients, a published panel, and a maker that states what it does not claim
  • Not for you if: you want live cultures specifically, you dislike a sharp lemon-like acidity, or you have a soy allergy and would rather not rely on a not-detected result (see Cautions)

How to Use

  1. Tear open one 10 ml sachet.
  2. Stir it into whatever you are drinking — water, sparkling water, tea or a hot drink. B&S confirms hot drinks are fine, since there are no live cultures to protect.
  3. Expect a sharp, lemon-like acidity rather than a neutral taste. In tea it reads as lemon tea; in sparkling water, as lemon squash. B&S also suggests it as a salad dressing.
  4. Take one to two sachets a day, at whatever time you will remember. B&S says exceeding the guideline amount is not a problem, but one to two is the stated amount.
  5. Store the box at room temperature, away from heat and humidity. Do not refrigerate — each sachet is single-use and sealed until you open it.

Frequency: One to two sachets daily. A 30-sachet box is 30 days at one a day, or a fortnight at two.

Ingredients and Nutrition Panel

Ingredients, in B&S's declared order: lactic acid bacteria fermentation extract (contains soy, produced in Japan) / citric acid, lactic acid. That is the whole list. The two acids were absent from this page until today.

On the soybeans. B&S states they are domestic and grown without pesticides at cultivation — 国産農薬不使用(栽培時)大豆. This page previously called the base organic. It is not a certified organic product: in Japan 有機 and オーガニック are reserved for 有機JAS certification, B&S does not use either word, and neither will we. B&S's own declaration is that every raw material is plant-derived, and that the product contains no sugar, fragrance, preservative or milk ingredient, and is casein-free.

Panel, per 10 ml sachet — B&S's published figures:

Protein 0 g
Fat 0 g
Carbohydrate 0.1 g
of which sugars 0 g
Salt equivalent 0.0 g

Cautions

  • This is a food supplement, not a medicine. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, and no effect on any condition is claimed here.
  • Soy is used in production. B&S states that soy allergen is not detected in the finished product, and asks anyone concerned to speak to a doctor or pharmacist. If you have a diagnosed soy allergy, treat a not-detected result as a reason to ask your doctor, not as clearance.
  • B&S states the product is suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding and for children. We would still ask you to check with your doctor or paediatrician first, particularly for a young child — that is our recommendation, not the maker's restriction.
  • If you are under medical care or take prescription medication, speak to your doctor before adding any supplement.
  • It is acidic. If you have reflux, a sensitive stomach or mouth ulcers, dilute it well and take it with food.
  • A food supplement is not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet.
  • Stop taking it and consult a healthcare professional if you notice any unusual reaction.
  • Store at room temperature away from heat, humidity and direct sunlight. Refrigeration is not required and the sachets are not designed to be resealed.
  • Each sachet is a single serving. Use it once it is open and do not keep a part-used sachet.
  • Keep out of reach of small children, and supervise a child taking it.

FAQ

Does it need to be kept in the fridge?

No. B&S states the product keeps at room temperature and has a two-year shelf life from manufacture; only heat and humidity are to be avoided. This page previously told you to refrigerate it after opening, which was wrong twice over — the storage instruction is not B&S's, and a sealed single-use 10 ml stick has no after-opening state to manage.

What does it taste like, and what can I put it in?

Not neutral. B&S describes no sweetness and a fresh acidity close to lemon juice, which is what the citric and lactic acid in the declaration give it. In black tea it reads as lemon tea, in sparkling water as lemon squash, and B&S also suggests using it as a salad dressing. Hot drinks are fine — there are no live cultures to protect.

Is the soy base organic?

No, and we should not have said so. B&S's claim is 国産農薬不使用(栽培時)大豆 — Japanese soybeans grown without pesticides at cultivation. That is a real claim and a narrower one. In Japan the words 有機 and オーガニック are reserved for 有機JAS-certified produce; B&S uses neither, this product carries no organic certification, and the page has been corrected.

Why does the page no longer list what it does?

Because the previous list was not the maker's. Eight statements — about stool and gas odour, body odour, breath, oral bacteria, small-intestine absorption and the share of beneficial bacteria — were presented as things the Japanese manufacturer reports. B&S publishes none of them. We have removed them rather than soften them. What B&S does say about the approach is in the overview above, in its words.

What is actually in the sachet, if not live bacteria?

The products of fermentation and the broken-down cell material of the bacteria themselves. Sixteen strains ferment soy milk; over a year of ageing the bacteria die and break apart; the liquid is then extracted and clarified, which is why it is transparent. Nothing in it is alive, which is also why it does not need cold storage or an enteric coating.
