Description

Shiseido Snow Beauty 2023 Brightening Skin Care Powder A — Quasi-Drug 4MSK Pressed Powder Set, Limited Edition

Overview

The tenth-anniversary edition of Shiseido's Snow Beauty, a Japanese quasi-drug pressed powder carrying the 4MSK whitening active (potassium 4-methoxysalicylate), approved by Japan's health ministry for the prevention of spots and freckles. It comes as a set: the powder, two puffs — a thin one and a fuller one, for daytime and evening use — and an exclusive pouch.

One thing to be clear about before you buy, because the name invites the wrong expectation: this is a brightening skincare powder, not a foundation. It goes on sheer, over your base in the morning or over your skincare in the evening, and it will not give you the coverage a foundation gives. If you need to cover something, it sits happily on top of a foundation. See also our brightening skincare and Japanese makeup.

Key Benefits

  • ✓ Japanese quasi-drug: the 4MSK active and its approved wording have been reviewed by Japan's health ministry
  • ✓ 4MSK works on two fronts — it slows melanin production and helps normalise turnover of melanin-loaded cells in the outer layer
  • ✓ Two puffs supplied, thin and full, so you can go sheer in the morning and heavier as an evening step
  • ✓ Designed to be worn over skincare at night, which is unusual for a powder and the point of the product
  • ✓ Tenth-anniversary limited-edition case and pouch, which is a large part of why the line is collected
  • ✓ Shipped from our base in Kobe, Japan with tracking, in the Japanese domestic packaging

Who Is This For?

  • Anyone building a brightening routine who wants an approved active in the last step rather than only in a serum
  • Skin that goes shiny or looks uneven by midday and wants a sheer set-and-brighten layer
  • People who like the Japanese habit of a light powder over evening skincare
  • Collectors of the Snow Beauty anniversary editions
  • Not for you if you want coverage — this is sheer by design and will not conceal redness, marks or blemishes

How to Use

  1. Morning use: apply your lotion, milk or makeup base first and let it settle.
  2. Take a little powder on the thin puff and glide it over the whole face — this is a sheer layer, not coverage, so a light hand is the right hand.
  3. Evening use: complete your skincare, then apply the powder with the fuller puff as the final step.
  4. For touch-ups during the day, press rather than sweep so you do not disturb what is underneath.
  5. Wash the puffs regularly and let them dry fully — a powder puff used on skincare gets dirty faster than one used on dry skin.

Frequency: Morning and evening. A brightening active only does anything if you use it consistently, and this is the step most people skip in the evening.

Full Ingredients

Approved active: potassium 4-methoxysalicylate (4MSK).

Other declared ingredients include: rosehip extract, shea butter, powder base and fragrance.

Shiseido does not publish the full ingredient list for this limited-edition SKU online. The correction worth making: the previous version of this page attributed the whitening effect to "the new whitening ingredient 4MSK" and separately to rosehip and shea. 4MSK is the approved active and it is not new — Shiseido had it approved in 2003. Rosehip and shea are emollients, not approved whitening actives.

Cautions

  • This product contains no sun filters and does not protect skin from UV — apply your sunscreen separately.
  • This is a Japanese quasi-drug (iyakubugaihin): the active ingredients and the effect claimed for them have been reviewed by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. Outside Japan it is sold as an ordinary cosmetic.
  • Wash the puffs regularly and replace them when they no longer come clean. A damp puff pressed onto skincare is a good environment for bacteria.
  • Discontinue use and consult a doctor if redness, itching, swelling or persistent stinging occurs.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes. If the product enters the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
  • Do not apply to broken, sunburned or actively inflamed skin.
  • Keep out of reach of children. Store away from direct sunlight and high temperatures.

FAQ

Is this a foundation or a skincare product?

Neither exactly, and the distinction is worth a sentence. It is a pressed powder that carries an approved brightening active: sheer, worn over your base in the morning to set it, and worn over your skincare in the evening as the last step. It gives a soft, even finish and it does not conceal. If you need to cover redness, a blemish or a dark mark, you need a foundation or concealer, and this will sit on top of one perfectly well.

How long before I see anything, and will dark spots disappear?

Give it eight to twelve weeks of uninterrupted twice-daily use before you judge it, and photograph your face in the same light at the start so you have something to compare against. What products in this category realistically do is make marks look lighter and stop new ones from darkening — they do not erase established pigmentation, and neither melasma nor a deep sun spot is a skincare problem alone. If nothing has shifted after three months, a dermatologist has options a toner does not.

Do I still need sunscreen while using this?

Yes, and it is not a detail you can skip. Ultraviolet light is what drives melanin production in the first place, so a brightening routine without daily sun protection is a bucket with a hole in it. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning you will see daylight, including through windows and on overcast days.

The packaging is in Japanese — how do I know what I am using?

The carton and bottle carry Japanese-language labelling, because this is stock made for the Japanese domestic market. Where an ingredient list appears on this page, it is translated from that labelling or from the manufacturer's own published data; where the manufacturer does not publish one, the ingredients section says so rather than filling the gap. Either way, send us a photo of anything unclear on the box after delivery and we will translate it, and ask us before ordering if you need the full label list first.

Will I pay customs duty or import VAT?

That depends on your country and on the declared value of the parcel, not on us. We ship from Japan with a correct customs declaration and full tracking; any duty or import VAT your country charges is collected by your local carrier or customs office on delivery. Check your national de-minimis threshold before ordering if you want to avoid a surprise.
