Description

Yuwa Barley Grass Aojiru — 3 g × 50 Sachets

Overview

This is aojiru with nothing added to make it pleasant: barley grass powder and dextrin, and that is the whole list. It tastes green, which is the honest answer to the question people ask before they buy. One 3 g sachet stirred into 100–180 ml of cold water takes about fifteen seconds and delivers roughly 9 kcal, 0.73 g of fibre and 63 µg of vitamin K.

Yuwa has made this in Musashimurayama, Tokyo, for years, out of a plant certified to ISO 22000. Fifty sachets is the size you buy once you already know you drink it — it is not the box to start with if you have never tried aojiru.

Aojiru (青汁) is the Japanese name for a powdered green drink, usually made from young barley grass or kale, that is stirred into water or milk and drunk once a day. It is sold in Japan as an ordinary food, not as a medicine: the point is to add vegetable material and dietary fibre to a diet that is short of both, in a format that takes fifteen seconds. Nothing on this page should be read as a treatment for any condition.

Who Is This For?

  • Someone who already drinks aojiru and wants the plainest, shortest ingredient list available
  • People avoiding sweeteners, flavourings and colours, who found the fruit versions too processed
  • Households buying at refill scale rather than trying it for the first time
  • Ask your doctor first if you take warfarin or another vitamin-K-sensitive anticoagulant — barley grass carries 63 µg of vitamin K per sachet
  • Not for you if you want it to taste of something. It tastes of grass, and there is nothing in the box to hide that

How to Use

  1. Tear open one sachet.
  2. Pour 100–180 ml of cold or room-temperature water into a glass or shaker.
  3. Add the powder and stir or shake until no lumps remain. A shaker gives the cleanest result; barley-grass powder resists a spoon.
  4. Drink it straight away — the powder settles within a minute or two.
  5. Milk, soy milk, apple juice or unsweetened yoghurt all work in place of water and blunt the grassy note; they also add their own calories, which plain water does not.

Frequency: One sachet a day. It is a food, so there is no course to complete and no loading period.

Ingredients & Nutrition

Ingredients (source: Yuwa product page): barley grass powder (manufactured in China), dextrin. That is the complete declaration — there are two.

A note on origin, because it matters here. The box is packed in Japan by a Japanese maker, but Yuwa declares the barley grass powder itself as 中国製造 — manufactured in China. We sell Japanese goods and we would rather you read that from us than find it on the sachet. If country of origin of the raw material is the deciding factor for you, this is not the aojiru to choose.

Nutrition, per 3 g sachet (source: Yuwa product page): energy 9.42 kcal · protein 0.67 g · fat 0.1 g · carbohydrate 1.82 g, of which sugars 1.09 g and dietary fibre 0.73 g · salt equivalent 0.005 g · calcium 9.6 mg · iron 0.42 mg · zinc 0.09 mg · potassium 99 mg · magnesium 3.3 mg · vitamin B1 0.02 mg · vitamin B2 0.04 mg · vitamin B6 0.03 mg · biotin 0.87 µg · folate 18.3 µg · vitamin C 0.63 mg · vitamin E 0.17 mg · vitamin K 63 µg · β-carotene 207 µg.

Yuwa also publishes a full amino acid breakdown for this sachet, including 66 mg glutamic acid, 63 mg aspartic acid and 45 mg leucine.

Cautions

  • This is a food, not a medicine. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking prescription medication or under medical supervision, ask your doctor before starting any supplement
  • Stop taking it and consult a doctor if it disagrees with you
  • Never swallow the powder dry — always dissolve it in liquid first, or it can catch in the throat
  • Keep out of the reach of small children
  • Store away from direct sunlight, heat and damp; finish an opened sachet the same day
  • Contains 63 µg of vitamin K per sachet. If you take warfarin or another anticoagulant whose dose is balanced against vitamin K intake, talk to the doctor who manages that prescription before adding this to your day

Package Contents

  • 1 × retail box, factory-sealed
  • 50 × 3 g single-serve sachets (150 g net)
  • No scoop, shaker or measuring spoon is included — the sachets are pre-measured

FAQ

What does it actually taste like?

Like grass, mildly and not unpleasantly, with no sweetness at all. There are two ingredients and neither of them is there to improve the flavour. If that sounds like a problem, Yuwa's fruit aojiru is built for exactly that objection.

Where is the barley grass from?

Yuwa declares the barley grass powder as manufactured in China; the product is blended and packed in Japan by Yuwa in Tokyo. We would rather say so plainly than let the word Japan on the box do work it should not do.

Is it a probiotic, or does it contain live bacteria?

No. This is the plain version: barley grass powder and dextrin. There are no bacteria in it at all, live or sterilised. Yuwa's fruit aojiru is the one with the lactic acid bacteria.

Can I take it with medication?

Ask your doctor, particularly about anticoagulants. Each sachet carries 63 µg of vitamin K, which is the specific interaction worth raising. This is a food and it is not intended to treat anything.

Why 50 sachets and not a smaller box?

Because this is the size people buy on repeat. At one a day it runs about seven weeks. If you have never had aojiru, start with a smaller box of something — a fifty-sachet box of a taste you turn out to dislike is a long fifty days.
