Overview

Japanese summers produced a whole shelf of cooling products, and this is Kao's spray version: a fine mist that takes heat off the skin as it evaporates. Kao's figure is a drop of up to 10°C, and the footnote matters — that is by heat of vaporisation, measured outdoors at 30°C, so it is the sensation of a fast-evaporating liquid rather than refrigeration.

The declaration is six items long and tells you most of what you need: ethanol, water, menthol, l-menthyl lactate, sodium hyaluronate-2, surfactant. Ethanol first — this is an alcohol-based spray, which is what makes it dry fast and leave no powder. Two cooling agents rather than one: menthol for the immediate hit, l-menthyl lactate for a slower and longer one.

Two practical things the old version of this page did not mention. The bottle holds about 240 sprays, and full-body use is five or six, so a 120 ml bottle is roughly forty applications. And it has a lock on the trigger, which is the difference between a bottle you can put in a bag and one you cannot.

How to Use

1. Before the first use, press the handle a few times to prime the pump.
2. Release the lock on the trigger.
3. Spray onto the areas you want to cool — neck, chest, arms, back, legs. It works held upside down, so your own back is reachable.
4. Let it dry; it goes fast and leaves nothing white behind.
5. Re-lock the trigger before it goes back in a bag.

Six items, and the order is informative. Ethanol first is the whole design: alcohol carries the menthol, evaporates fast and takes the heat with it, which is the cooling effect. It is also the reason this is the wrong product for anyone with alcohol-sensitive skin, and why it is flammable.

Two cooling molecules rather than one. Menthol gives the immediate cold sensation; l-menthyl lactate is milder and slower, and it is what keeps the feeling going after the alcohol has gone. Sodium hyaluronate-2 is the only thing in the bottle that is not cooling or carrying — a humectant, present so the skin is not left purely stripped.

There is no fragrance ingredient in the declaration, which is what "unscented" means here.

• Do not use if the cooling sensation of menthol bothers you, if you are hypersensitive to alcohol, or if your skin is very sensitive.

Reapplying is the intended use, which is why the bottle holds around 240 sprays.

Can I use it on my face?

No. It is for the body only — neck, chest, arms, back, legs. It is an alcohol and menthol spray and the face, the eyes and mucous membranes are all reasons not to. Kao says the same.

Will it mark dark clothing?

No. There is no powder in the formula and nothing to leave a white residue, and it dries fast enough that clothes do not feel damp. That is what the fast-drying, non-powder design is for.

Is it safe to fly with or keep in a bag?

In a bag, yes — the trigger locks, which is what stops it discharging against the contents. Flying is a different question: it is an alcohol-based flammable product, and airline rules on that vary. Check your airline before packing it, and do not leave it in a hot car either way.

How is this different from the Bioré cooling body sheets?
