Description

Dear-Natura Vitamin C 1,000 mg, 60-Day Supply — 120 Tablets, Gelatin-Free

Overview

Two tablets a day supply 1,000 mg of vitamin C, with vitamin B2 6.0 mg and vitamin B6 2.0 mg. 120 tablets, 60 days.

The declaration is five items long: vitamin C, pullulan, calcium stearate, vitamin B2, vitamin B6. There is no capsule shell, no gelatin, no colorant and no sweetener — pullulan is a polysaccharide made by fermentation and calcium stearate is the tablet lubricant. That makes this suitable for vegetarians and vegans, and it is the practical difference between this and the DHC vitamin C we also stock, which is a gelatin capsule.

1,000 mg is a high dose — more than twelve times the European nutrient reference value of 80 mg. The Cautions section says what that means in practice, including the two things a high vitamin C intake does that nobody expects: it raises urinary oxalate, and it interferes with home glucose meters and with faecal occult blood tests.

Who Is This For?

  • Anyone who wants a high-dose vitamin C and wants to know what the dose is
  • Vegetarians and vegans, who are usually shut out of this category by gelatin capsules
  • People who react badly to colorants, sweeteners or fillers and are looking for a short declaration
  • Anyone comparing this against the DHC vitamin C we also stock — same nominal purpose, different excipients, and DHC's has a gelatin shell and titanium dioxide
  • Not for: anyone with kidney stones or reduced kidney function without a doctor's agreement; anyone with haemochromatosis or another iron-overload condition; anyone under 18; anyone pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding; anyone under medical treatment without asking a doctor first.

How to Use

  1. Take two tablets a day.
  2. Swallow them with water or lukewarm water.
  3. If you find a gram at once uncomfortable, take one tablet in the morning and one in the evening — vitamin C is water-soluble and split doses are absorbed at least as well.
  4. Taking them with food reduces the stomach upset some people get at this dose.
  5. Do not exceed two tablets a day, and count any other vitamin C you are taking towards the same total.

Full Japanese declaration: vitamin C, pullulan, calcium stearate, vitamin B2, vitamin B6

Five items, and that is the whole product. Pullulan is a polysaccharide produced by fermentation and used here as the binder; calcium stearate is the lubricant that stops the tablet sticking to the press. Neither is of animal origin, there is no capsule shell, and there is no colorant, sweetener, flavouring or preservative. The product is therefore suitable for vegetarians and vegans, and none of the 28 allergens in the Japanese declaration scope is present.

Cautions

  • 1,000 mg is more than twelve times the European nutrient reference value of 80 mg. At and above roughly this level, vitamin C commonly causes diarrhoea, nausea and stomach cramps. If that happens, split the dose or stop.
  • Raised urinary oxalate. Vitamin C is metabolised partly to oxalate, and gram-level intakes increase how much of it the kidneys excrete. Anyone who has had calcium-oxalate kidney stones, or who has reduced kidney function, should not take a gram a day without their doctor's agreement.
  • It interferes with two common tests. High vitamin C can give falsely high or falsely low readings on home blood-glucose meters, and can mask blood in a faecal occult blood test. Tell the clinic or laboratory that you take this before either test.
  • It increases absorption of dietary iron. Useful for most people, and a reason to avoid it if you have haemochromatosis or another iron-overload condition.
  • Asahi prints three exclusions on the pack itself: do not take this if you are under medical treatment or taking prescribed medicine without asking your doctor first; not for children or anyone under 18; and not while pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Vitamin B2 at 6.0 mg turns urine a bright yellow within a few hours. This is harmless and is simply the excess being excreted, but it is alarming if nobody warns you.
  • Do not exceed the stated daily serving. More is not better with this formula.
  • Stop taking it and speak to a doctor if you feel unwell after use.
  • Store away from direct sunlight, high temperature and humidity, and out of the reach of children.
  • This is a food, not a medicine. It does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, and it is not a substitute for a varied diet or for medical advice.

FAQ

How much vitamin C is in a serving?

1,000 mg in two tablets, plus vitamin B2 6.0 mg and vitamin B6 2.0 mg. It is worth checking that figure against whatever else you take: vitamin C is one of the nutrients people most often end up taking twice over without noticing.

Is it vegetarian or vegan?

Yes. The declaration is vitamin C, pullulan, calcium stearate, vitamin B2 and vitamin B6 — five items, none of animal origin, and no capsule shell. This is the practical difference between this product and most Japanese vitamin C, including the DHC one we also sell, which is a gelatin capsule.

Is a gram a day too much?

It is well above what a diet supplies and above what most people need, and it is a common intake. The honest answer is that it is generally tolerated but has specific consequences: loose stools at or above this level, more oxalate in the urine, interference with home glucose meters and stool blood tests, and more iron absorbed from food. All four are in the Cautions section. If you have kidney stones or kidney disease, ask your doctor first.

Why has my urine turned bright yellow?

Vitamin B2, 6.0 mg of it. Riboflavin is fluorescent yellow and the excess is excreted within hours. It is harmless and it stops when you stop taking the product.

Can I take it during pregnancy?

No. Asahi prints an exclusion for pregnant and breastfeeding women and for women planning a pregnancy on the pack, along with exclusions for under-18s and for anyone under medical treatment. We repeat the maker's instruction rather than soften it.
