A 30 g cream from Tokyo Koshisha, a Japanese maker that has built one line and kept it: 特製エキシウクリーム, a quasi-drug whose mechanism is astringency rather than the aluminium chlorohydrate most modern antiperspirants use. The astringent is 乾燥硫酸アルミニウムカリウム — dried potassium aluminium sulfate, burnt alum — which tightens the skin around the sweat pore so less sweat surfaces, with an antibacterial action alongside it for the bacteria that produce the smell.

Two things about our old page need saying. It claimed this was the most popular and most effective product of its kind in Japan; neither is checkable and both are gone. And it carried the same text as our Exsiu spray listing, which is a different product with different chemistry.

How to Use

1. Wash the underarm and dry it completely. Alum astringency works on dry skin; on damp skin it simply washes away.
2. Take a small amount — less than you think, roughly a grain of rice per underarm — on a fingertip.
3. Spread it thinly and evenly. It should disappear into the skin rather than sit on it.
4. Let it settle for a minute before dressing. Wash it off at the end of the day with soap.

Tokyo Koshisha describes the cream as working through two actions. The astringent component is 乾燥硫酸アルミニウムカリウム — dried potassium aluminium sulfate, the compound sold in kitchens as burnt alum — together with further astringent components, which tighten the tissue around the sweat pore. Alongside it sits an antibacterial action directed at the skin bacteria that break sweat down into odour.

This product is a Japanese quasi-drug (医薬部外品): a regulated tier between a cosmetic and a medicine. It carries a declared active ingredient and an officially approved purpose, and it may not claim anything beyond that purpose. FAQ

How is this different from the Exsiu spray we also sell?

They are two different products and until today our two pages said the same thing about both, which was our error. This cream works by astringency — burnt alum tightening the tissue around the sweat pore. The 38 mL エキシウS spray uses aluminium chlorohydrate and benzalkonium chloride in an alcohol base, and is a non-gas pump spray. Different chemistry, different format, and the spray contains alcohol while the cream does not.

Is alum safe to put on skin?

Potassium aluminium sulfate has a long history in this use, and Japan's quasi-drug system has approved this specific product for it. That is not the same as saying it suits everyone: alum can feel tightening, and some people find it drying with daily use. Patch test, use a small amount, and stop if the skin objects.

Our old page called this the most effective body-odour product in Japan. Was that true?

We could not find a source for it, so we removed it. What we can say is what the maker declares and what the quasi-drug registration covers. If a superlative cannot be attributed, it should not be on a product page.

Does a 30 g tube really last?

The amount needed per underarm is about the size of a grain of rice, so yes, a tube goes a long way. If you are using visibly more than that, the layer is thicker than it needs to be and is more likely to feel tight than to work better.

Is it fragranced?

It is not a perfumed product. It is designed to remove the reason for the smell rather than to cover it, which is why it works under a fragrance you have chosen yourself.
