Overview
FANCL built its whole brand on preservative-free formulation, and the Mild Cleansing Oil is its best-known product in Japan. The Black variant keeps the same base and adds charcoal, pyrophyllite, quartz and kaolin — four adsorbent powders aimed at the keratin plugs Japanese buyers call strawberry nose.
We have corrected two things on this page. The base is not plant oil, whatever the previous version said, and the formula contains soy protein and two essential oils that anyone with a sensitivity should know about. Details below. See our Japanese cleansers.

How to Use
- Use on dry hands and a dry face. Two to three pumps.
- Massage for thirty to sixty seconds, concentrating on nose, chin and anywhere makeup is heaviest.
- Wet your hands and keep massaging until the oil turns milky.
- Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, then follow with your usual face wash.
Frequency: Once daily in the evening. There is no reason to double-cleanse in the morning.

The first several ingredients are synthetic esters and silicones, not plant oils. Our previous version of this page described a plant-oil base; that was wrong, and it matters because ester-based cleansing oils behave differently — they emulsify more readily and leave less residue, which is a point in this product's favour rather than against it. Sunflower seed oil appears near the end at a low level.

Cautions
- Contains soy-derived ingredients — avoid if you have a soy allergy.
- Contains citrus peel oil. Rinse-off products carry little photosensitivity risk, but wear daily sunscreen and do not leave the product on the skin.
- Contains rosemary leaf oil, a known contact allergen for some people.
- Preservative-free: use within about six months of opening, keep the pump clean, and store away from heat and sunlight.
- Not a treatment for acne. It removes surface plugs and makeup; inflammatory acne needs a different tool.
- Patch test on the inner forearm before first use, especially if your skin is reactive.
- Discontinue use and consult a doctor if redness, itching, swelling or persistent stinging occurs.
- Avoid contact with the eyes. If the product enters the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
- Do not apply to broken, sunburned or actively inflamed skin.
- Keep out of reach of children. Store away from direct sunlight and high temperatures.

FAQ
How is Black different from the regular Mild Cleansing Oil?
Same cleansing base, plus four adsorbent powders: charcoal, pyrophyllite, quartz and kaolin. Those are the pore-care part. If blackheads and keratin plugs are your reason for buying a cleansing oil, Black is the better match. If you just want makeup off cleanly, the regular version does that identically and costs less.
Is preservative-free actually a good thing?
It is a real trade-off rather than a straight win. Without preservatives there is nothing in the bottle to suppress microbial growth if water gets in, which is why FANCL packages in smaller volumes with pump dispensers and gives a short after-opening window. In exchange you avoid a whole category of ingredients that some people react to. If you use it daily and finish the bottle within a few months, the trade works in your favour. If you buy three at a time and use them slowly, it does not.
Does it suit sensitive skin?
Partly. It is fragrance-free in the sense of having no added perfume, and preservative-free, which removes two common irritant categories. But it contains yuzu peel oil and rosemary leaf oil, both essential oils and both capable of causing contact reactions, and hydrolysed soy protein. Our earlier version of this page called it suitable for sensitive skin without mentioning any of that. Patch test on the inner forearm first.
The packaging is in Japanese — how do I know what I am using?
The carton and bottle carry Japanese-language labelling, because this is stock made for the Japanese domestic market. Where an ingredient list appears on this page, it is translated from that labelling or from the manufacturer's own published data; where the manufacturer does not publish one, the ingredients section says so rather than filling the gap. Either way, send us a photo of anything unclear on the box after delivery and we will translate it, and ask us before ordering if you need the full label list first.
Will I pay customs duty or import VAT?
That depends on your country and on the declared value of the parcel, not on us. We ship from Japan with a correct customs declaration and full tracking; any duty or import VAT your country charges is collected by your local carrier or customs office on delivery.
