What does "Food with Functional Claims" actually mean?
It is a Japanese regulatory category, 機能性表示食品. The manufacturer compiles the scientific evidence for a specific function, submits it to the Consumer Affairs Agency and may then state that function on the label. Crucially, the government files the notification — it does not evaluate or approve it, and FANCL is required to print that distinction. Is FANCL's "world first" claim as big as it sounds?
It is narrower than it sounds, and FANCL's own footnote says so. The company's claim is that it published the first research paper studying agrimony with a focus on senescent cells, as judged by listings in PubMed and the Japanese medical database Ichushi-Web. That is a claim about the publication record, not a declaration that senescent-cell science is settled or that this capsule reverses ageing. We have reproduced the scope rather than the headline.
What are senescent cells, and what is the mechanism here?
Senescent cells have stopped dividing but do not clear away, and they accumulate as we get older. FANCL's position is that agrimols reduce them, and that this is the mechanism behind the two functions it notified — maintaining vitality and easing temporary tiredness. Treat the mechanism as the manufacturer's account of why its trial result occurred, not as an independently settled fact.
