What the active actually does. This is a quasi-drug (医薬部外品), which in Japan means the active ingredient and its approved wording are both registered. The active is tranexamic acid, and the approved claim is that it suppresses melanin formation and so prevents spots and freckles. It is a preventive claim, not a removal claim. Wording such as "visibly fades dark spots over time" goes beyond what the product is approved to say, so you will not find it here.
Rich versus light. Shirojun toner comes in two textures with the same active at the same strength. This one is しっとり — rich — with more humectant, and it sits better on dry and dehydrated skin, especially in winter. The さっぱり (light) version is the one to pick for oily skin or hot weather.
The rest of the formula. Alongside the active there are two hyaluronic acids, a stable vitamin C derivative, vitamin E, and Job's tears (hatomugi) extract and ferment. No fragrance, no colourant, no mineral oil, no ethanol, no parabens.

How to Use
- Cleanse and pat the face dry, leaving the skin slightly damp.
- Pour about 2–3 ml into the palm or onto a cotton pad.
- Press it into the face and neck with the flat of the hand. Do not rub.
- Repeat two or three times if the skin still feels tight — thin passes absorb better than one thick one.
- Follow with an emulsion or cream to seal it in, and with sunscreen in the morning.
Frequency: Twice a day, morning and evening. A preventive whitening active only works while you keep using it.

Cautions
- Not a medicine. It does not treat melasma, post-inflammatory pigmentation or any skin condition.
- External use only. Avoid the eye area; rinse with water if it gets in the eyes.
- Stop using it if the skin reddens, stings or itches, and see a doctor if that does not settle.
- Patch test on the inner forearm first if your skin reacts easily.
- A whitening active does not replace sun protection. Without daily sunscreen the prevention claim is moot.

FAQ
Is the rich version stronger than the light one?
No. The active and its concentration are the same in both. The difference is humectant load and therefore how the toner feels and how long the skin stays comfortable. Choose by skin type and season, not by expected effect.
Will this remove spots I already have?
No, and we will not say that it will. The approved Japanese claim is prevention — suppressing melanin formation so that new spots and freckles do not form. Pigmentation that has already established itself is a dermatology question.
What does 医薬部外品 (quasi-drug) mean in practice?
It is a Japanese regulatory category between cosmetics and medicines. The manufacturer has to prove the active works at the stated concentration, and in exchange may use a specific approved phrase — here, suppressing melanin formation to prevent spots and freckles. It is a higher bar than a plain cosmetic, and a much lower one than a medicine.
Can I use it with a vitamin C serum or a retinoid?
With a vitamin C serum, yes — the toner already contains a vitamin C derivative and the two do not conflict. With a retinoid, introduce them on alternate evenings first; the combination is not dangerous, but two actives at once on unaccustomed skin is the usual cause of irritation people blame on the newer product.
How long does a 170 ml bottle last?
At 2–3 ml twice a day, roughly a month of daily use — less if you layer three passes. This is why the refill pouch exists in Japan.
