Description

Hada Labo Gokujun UV White Gel SPF50+ PA++++ — Japanese All-in-One Sunscreen Gel, 90 g

Overview

Rohto's 極潤 UVホワイトゲル puts SPF50+ and PA++++ — the highest PA rating issued in Japan — into a single gel that also does the work of a toner, essence, emulsion, cream, pack and makeup base. Six functions plus UV, which is three more than our previous page credited it with.

Three declared moisture ingredients: a vitamin C derivative, hyaluronic acid and nano hyaluronic acid. The vitamin C derivative is what the "White" in the name refers to, and our previous page did not mention it at all. See the rest of our Japanese sunscreens.

A note on the name. The Japanese is ホワイト — "white". In Japanese regulatory language 美白 (whitening) is a quasi-drug claim that requires a registered active, and this product is sold as a 化粧品, a cosmetic. So "White" here is a product name and a description of the finish — no white cast — not a pigmentation claim. We used to translate it as "Whitening", which invited exactly the wrong expectation.

Key Benefits

  • SPF50+ / PA++++ — PA++++ is the highest ultraviolet-A rating issued under the Japanese system
  • Six functions plus UV protection — toner, essence, emulsion, cream, pack and makeup base, per Rohto. Our previous page credited it with three
  • Vitamin C derivative with hyaluronic acid and nano hyaluronic acid — the three declared moisture ingredients
  • No white cast, in a gel texture that works under makeup or worn alone
  • Fragrance-free, colorant-free, paraben-free
  • 90 g — a large tube, which matters because sunscreen only works when you use enough of it
  • Tells you how much to apply and when to reapply, which is the difference between the number on the tube and the protection on your face

Who Is This For?

  • People who want a one-step morning routine — this genuinely replaces several products, and that is its reason to exist
  • People who dislike white cast from sunscreen, particularly under or instead of makeup
  • People who need the highest UVA rating available — PA++++ is the top of the Japanese scale
  • People who react to fragrance in sunscreen
  • Not for anyone expecting it to fade pigmentation — it is a cosmetic and is not registered to make a whitening claim, whatever its name suggests

How to Use

  1. Use enough. For a face, that is roughly a two-finger length of gel, or about a third of a teaspoon. This is the step almost everyone skips, and it is the one that decides whether you get the SPF on the tube.
  2. Apply it as the last step of your morning routine, on clean dry skin, and let it settle for a minute or two before makeup.
  3. Do not forget the edges: hairline, ears, the sides of the neck and the back of the hands.
  4. Reapply every two to three hours outdoors, and immediately after sweating, swimming or towelling. No sunscreen survives a towel.
  5. If you are wearing it as a moisturiser rather than as a sunscreen, you are probably applying it too thinly for the SPF to hold. On a day outdoors, apply it as a sunscreen — generously — and treat the moisturising as a bonus.

Frequency: Every morning; reapply every 2–3 hours outdoors and after sweating or swimming.

Full Ingredients

Declared moisture ingredients: a vitamin C derivative, hyaluronic acid, and nano hyaluronic acid. UV performance: SPF50+ / PA++++. Free from: fragrance, colorant, parabens.

Note that unlike the Gokujun Premium Cream in the same range, Rohto does not state that this gel is alcohol-free, so neither do we.

We do not publish a full ingredient declaration for this product, because the manufacturer does not publish it either and we have not been able to read it from a source we can cite. Rather than fill the gap with a plausible guess, this page says so. The declaration printed on the pack is the authority — write to us and we will read it off the box before we dispatch.

Cautions

  • Sunscreen only works at the quantity it was tested at. A thin layer of an SPF50+ product does not give you SPF50+ — see the application amount in How to Use
  • Try a small amount on the inner forearm before the first full use, especially if your skin reacts easily
  • Stop using it if redness, itching, swelling or stinging appears, and see a doctor if it does not settle
  • Avoid contact with the eyes; if the product gets in, rinse immediately with plenty of water
  • Do not apply to broken, inflamed or sunburnt skin
  • This is a cosmetic, not a whitening quasi-drug. It is not registered to make a pigmentation claim, and this page does not make one
  • Remove it properly at the end of the day — a UV gel worn under makeup needs cleansing off, not just rinsing
  • Sun protection is not only sunscreen: shade, timing and clothing do more of the work than any single product
  • Store away from direct sunlight, heat and damp — a car in summer is the usual way these products are ruined
  • Keep out of reach of children

Package Contents

One 90 g tube in its printed Rohto carton. That is a generous size for a facial sunscreen, and deliberately so — the most common reason a sunscreen underperforms is that people ration it.

FAQ

Does the "White" in the name mean it lightens pigmentation?

No. In Japanese regulation 美白 — whitening — is a quasi-drug claim requiring a registered active, and this product is a 化粧品, a cosmetic. The ホワイト in its name refers to the vitamin C derivative in the formula and to the finish, which leaves no white cast. Our previous page translated the name as "Whitening", which invited an expectation the product is not registered to meet, and that has been corrected.

Why does the page not list the full ingredients?

Because Rohto does not publish a complete INCI for this SKU anywhere we can reach, and no retailer reproduces one. Our previous page had an unfinished editorial note sitting in that section instead. On a sunscreen — a category people check ingredient lists for because of allergies and filter preferences — a guessed list would be worse than an admitted gap. Write to us and we will read the tube before dispatch.

How much should I actually use?

About two finger-lengths of gel for a face, or roughly a third of a teaspoon. SPF is measured at a standard thickness, and almost nobody applies that much — which is why a thin layer of SPF50+ does not give you SPF50+. This is the most useful sentence on the page and the one our previous version did not have.

Can I use it instead of my morning moisturiser?

That is what it is for — Rohto lists six functions plus UV: toner, essence, emulsion, cream, pack and makeup base. One caveat worth knowing: if you are treating it as a moisturiser you will tend to apply it thinly, and at that thickness the SPF does not hold. On a day outdoors, apply it as a sunscreen and let the moisturising be the bonus.

Is there another product with almost the same name?

Yes — Rohto also makes a 濃極潤 UVホワイトゲル in the same 90 g, SPF50+/PA++++ format. Two similar names on one shelf. Check the box carefully if you are reordering from a photograph.
