Cautions
- This is a Japanese over-the-counter medicine, not a cosmetic or a supplement. The box and the package insert are in Japanese only. It has not been assessed by the FDA, EMA, MHRA or any regulator outside Japan, and many countries restrict or prohibit the personal import of medicines. Is it really for skin and for menopause at once?
That is what the combined formula is: Kamishoyosan is the circulation-and-mood half of the Japanese approval, Shimotsuto the blood-nourishing half that carries the skin indications. The previous version of this page went further and called it the one product in the range that does both — a claim we cannot check against Kobayashi's own catalogue, so it is gone.
How long before I can tell?
A box is fourteen days, and Kampo is generally assessed over weeks. If nothing at all has shifted after a couple of boxes, that is information too — take it to a pharmacist rather than to a third box.
Is it hormonal?
No. It is a herbal prescription and contains no hormone.
Can I take it with my other Kampo?
Not without asking. Kampo formulas share crude drugs, and licorice in particular adds up across products. A pharmacist can tell you in a minute whether two formulas overlap.
Why is licorice singled out in the cautions?
Because it is the ingredient here with a documented risk on long use, and because a fourteen-day box invites reordering. Pseudoaldosteronism is uncommon but well described, and it is worth knowing the word before the third box rather than after.
