This card keeps the volume name; its sibling has been corrected to lengthening.

Volume means thickness at the base: a heavier deposit low on the lash where the eye reads density, rather than product carried out to the tips. Waterproof, black, and it holds a curl — which matters more on a volume formula than on any other, because weight is what pulls a curl down.

How to Use

1. Curl the lashes first if you curl them. A waterproof film sets hard, and a curler used afterwards bends a coated lash rather than the lash.
2. Wipe the wand on the neck of the tube. A loaded wand is the cause of nearly every clump anyone has ever blamed on a formula.
3. Start at the root and wiggle side to side as you draw upward. The colour that matters is at the base; the tips are the easy part.
4. Second coat only while the first is still slightly wet. Over a dry coat you get flakes, and this is the mistake that makes people give up on a mascara.

KATE does not publish a full INCI list for it on the pages we consulted, and we have not built one from what waterproof mascaras generally contain — a film former and a wax system vary considerably between formulas, and that variation is exactly what a person with a reaction needs to know about.

Cautions

• Do not use on eyes that are irritated, infected or recovering from a procedure
• Avoid contact with the eyes; if the product gets in, rinse immediately with plenty of water
• Remove eye makeup before sleeping. Sleeping in it is the most reliable way to lose lashes and irritate the lid margin
• Waterproof mascara needs an oil-based or dedicated eye-makeup remover. Rubbing a set film off dry is the most common way people pull out their own lashes
• If you wear lash extensions, check with whoever applied them before using a waterproof mascara — most extension adhesives object to the removers this formula requires
• Replace an opened eye product after about three months. Eye cosmetics pick up bacteria from the lash line and no preservative system outlasts that indefinitely
• Do not share eye makeup, and do not add water or any other liquid to thin a product that has dried
• Stop using it if redness, itching, swelling or stinging appears, and see a doctor if it does not settle
• Try a small amount on the inner forearm before the first full use, especially if your skin reacts easily
• Keep out of reach of children

FAQ

What is the difference between your two KATE mascaras?

This one builds volume; the other lengthens. Until today both of our listings said "Kate Volume" in the title and carried identical descriptions, which was our error — the pair was impossible to choose between. Volume thickens and gathers the lashes; length separates and extends them. If your lashes are fine and sparse, start here. If they are short, the lengthening listing is the one.

It clumps. Is that the formula?

Usually not. A volume mascara deposits more product per stroke by design, so a wand taken straight from the tube carries more than one lash can hold. Wipe the wand on the neck of the tube before every application, and build a second coat while the first is still slightly wet rather than after it dries. That solves the great majority of clumping.

How do I take it off without losing lashes?

An oil-based cleanser or a dedicated eye-makeup remover, pressed against the closed lid for ten or fifteen seconds before you wipe. The pressing is what dissolves the film; the wiping is only meant to lift what has already let go. Every lash lost to mascara removal is lost in a wipe that started too early.

Can I use it with lash extensions?

Ask whoever applied them first. Waterproof mascara needs an oily remover to come off, and most extension adhesives are dissolved by exactly that. Some technicians allow a water-soluble mascara on extensions and none we know of recommend a waterproof one.
