Description

KOSE Grace One Perfect Gel Cream, 100 g

Overview

Grace One is KOSE Cosmeport's drugstore line for women in their late forties and beyond, and the Perfect Gel Cream is its flagship: a single jar that KOSE positions as replacing eight steps, built on astaxanthin, two collagens, hyaluronic acid and a small amount of retinol.

It is a genuinely well-stocked formula for the price. It is also not a vegan or an allergen-neutral one, and the previous version of this page never said so. Read the ingredient section before you buy. See the rest of our Japanese moisturisers.

Key Benefits

  • Astaxanthin, the red carotenoid antioxidant from Haematococcus algae that gives the gel its colour, alongside tocopherol and BHT as the antioxidant set
  • Two collagens plus a water-soluble collagen crosspolymer and hydrolysed elastin as film-forming humectants — this is where the cushiony feel comes from
  • Sodium hyaluronate and hydrolysed hyaluronic acid at different molecular weights
  • A small amount of retinol in an everyday gel-cream base, plus ascorbyl dipalmitate as a stable vitamin C ester
  • Rosehip fruit oil, meadowfoam oil, corn oil and shea-family emollients for the richer feel expected in this age bracket
  • One 100 g jar covering toner, emulsion, essence, cream, eye area, neck and mask steps — the practical argument for the format

Who Is This For?

  • Mature skin in the mid-forties and beyond that wants richness without buying five separate products
  • Dry to normal skin — the emollient load is high and oily skin will likely find it too much
  • Anyone who wants a retinol-containing routine step at drugstore pricing rather than serum pricing
  • Not suitable for vegans: the formula contains collagen, elastin and squalane the manufacturer describes as shark-derived
  • Not for use in pregnancy or breastfeeding without medical agreement, because of the retinol

How to Use

  1. After cleansing, take a pearl-sized amount with a clean spatula.
  2. Warm it between your palms, then press it over the face, neck and around the eyes.
  3. Use it as your whole post-cleanse routine, or over a toner if your skin is very dry.
  4. In the morning, always finish with sunscreen — a retinol-containing routine without SPF works against itself.

Frequency: Evening every day. Morning use is fine, always under sunscreen.

Full Ingredients

Full ingredient list as published: water, DPG, glycerin, BG, ethanol, meadowfoam oil, PEG-240/decyltetradeceth-20/HDI copolymer, astaxanthin, Canadian rosehip fruit oil, glycine, succinylated atelocollagen, pomegranate peel extract, ascorbyl dipalmitate, tocopherol, retinol, sodium hyaluronate, Haematococcus pluvialis extract, hydrolysed elastin, hydrolysed hyaluronic acid, water-soluble collagen, water-soluble collagen crosspolymer, BHT, acrylates/C10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer, oleyl oleate, corn oil, PG dicaprate, dimethicone, squalane, sodium stearoyl methyl taurate, cetearyl alcohol, tri(caprylic/capric) glyceryl, sorbitan palmitate, dipentaerythrityl hexa(hydroxystearate/stearate/rosinate), behenyl alcohol, sodium phosphate, sodium hydroxide, hydrogenated rapeseed oil fatty acid glyceride, ethylparaben, phenoxyethanol, methylparaben.

Three things worth naming. The collagens and elastin are animal proteins. KOSE's own product description identifies the squalane as deep-sea shark liver oil, which the previous version of this page repeated as a selling point without noting what it means. And the formula is preserved with ethylparaben and methylparaben alongside phenoxyethanol — relevant if you avoid parabens.

Ingredient list as declared by the manufacturer. Formulations are occasionally revised, so always read the list printed on the package you receive.

Cautions

  • Contains animal-derived ingredients — not suitable for vegans.
  • Contains a retinol-type ingredient: use sunscreen during the day and avoid it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless your doctor agrees.
  • The formula includes a paraben preservative — worth knowing if you prefer paraben-free skincare.
  • Contains ethanol fairly high in the list, which can sting a compromised barrier.
  • Jar packaging with retinol inside: close it firmly, store away from light, and take product with clean dry hands or a spatula.
  • Patch test on the inner forearm before first use, especially if your skin is reactive.
  • Discontinue use and consult a doctor if redness, itching, swelling or persistent stinging occurs.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes. If the product enters the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
  • Do not apply to broken, sunburned or actively inflamed skin.
  • Keep out of reach of children. Store away from direct sunlight and high temperatures.

FAQ

Is this product halal or suitable for vegans?

The formula contains two collagens, hydrolysed elastin and squalane that the manufacturer identifies as shark-derived, so it is neither vegan nor free of animal ingredients. The product carries no halal certification — Japanese domestic cosmetics are rarely certified — so if certification itself matters to you, this product does not have it.

Is the retinol here enough to do anything?

It is genuine retinol rather than an ester, which is worth something, but it sits well down a long ingredient list in a gel cream — this is a supporting role, not a retinol treatment. If retinol is the reason you are buying, a dedicated serum will give you a known concentration and a proper introduction schedule. If you want a comfortable mature-skin moisturiser that happens to include some, this is a reasonable buy.

Does one jar really replace eight products?

It replaces eight steps in the marketing sense: hydration, emollience, occlusion, an antioxidant, a retinoid and a vitamin C ester in one place. What one jar cannot do is give each of those the concentration a dedicated product would, and it cannot replace sunscreen. Treat the eight-in-one claim as a description of convenience rather than of potency, and it is an honest product.

The packaging is in Japanese — how do I know what I am using?

The carton and bottle carry Japanese-language labelling, because this is stock made for the Japanese domestic market. Where an ingredient list appears on this page, it is translated from that labelling or from the manufacturer's own published data; where the manufacturer does not publish one, the ingredients section says so rather than filling the gap. Either way, send us a photo of anything unclear on the box after delivery and we will translate it, and ask us before ordering if you need the full label list first.

Will I pay customs duty or import VAT?

That depends on your country and on the declared value of the parcel, not on us. We ship from Japan with a correct customs declaration and full tracking; any duty or import VAT your country charges is collected by your local carrier or customs office on delivery. Check your national de-minimis threshold before ordering if you want to avoid a surprise.
