The head is 100% 細長峰 goat hair — a slim-tip grade — and the tips are left uncut, so each hair keeps the natural taper it grew with rather than a blunt scissored end. That is the whole difference between this and a moulded silicone or nylon brush: uncut tips whip cleanser into a dense foam and enter a pore without scraping the skin around it.

How to Use

1. Wet the bristles through with water or lukewarm water.
2. Work your cleanser into the brush in the palm of your hand until a firm, dense foam forms. For bar soap, lather the brush directly on the bar.
3. Apply the foam to an already-damp face in gentle circles. The foam does the work, not pressure.
4. On the T-zone or around visible pores, use only the very tips with small precise movements — that is what lets the tapered ends reach inside a pore.
5. Rinse your face thoroughly by hand, leaving no cleanser behind.
6. Rinse the brush until the water runs clear, squeeze gently, reshape the head, and hang it bristle-down to dry.
7. Apply toner or lotion straight afterwards, while the skin is still damp.

Materials and Construction

Bristles. 100% goat hair of the 細長峰 grade — literally "slim long peak", the slim-tipped selection used in professional Kumano cosmetic brushes. The tips are uncut: each hair keeps the tapered point it grew with, rather than being trimmed to length as a machine-made brush is. A cut tip is a blunt cylinder and scrapes; a natural tip is a needle and does not.

Cautions

• Do a patch test before first use.
• Stop using it at once if redness, itching or irritation appears.
• Do not use on broken skin, active acne, sunburn or any area a dermatologist has asked you to leave alone.
• Let the foam and the tips do the work. Pressing the brush into the skin is what turns a cleansing brush into an abrasion.
• Not a treatment for acne, blackheads or any skin condition; it is a washing tool.
• Rinse until the water runs clear every time. A brush left with cleanser and sebae in it will grow bacteria and go back onto your face.
• Dry it bristle-down, hanging, and never stood on its bristles or put away damp.
• Do not use boiling water, a hairdryer, a washing machine or a dishwasher on it. Heat and detergent destroy the tips and loosen the glue in the ferrule.

How often should I use it?

Daily is fine on normal or oily skin. On dry or sensitive skin, keep it to two or three times a week, or use it on the T-zone only and wash the rest of the face with your hands. If your skin feels tight or looks pink after washing, you are using it too often or pressing too hard.

How do I wash and dry the brush itself?

Rinse it under running water until the water runs clear — every time, not weekly. Squeeze the water out gently with a towel rather than wringing it, reshape the head with your fingers, and hang it bristle-down on its cord. Never stand it on its bristles and never put it away damp: water running into the ferrule is what loosens the glue and starts the shedding.

Will it shed hairs?

A few in the first week or two is normal for any natural-hair brush and settles down. Steady shedding after that usually means the ferrule has been getting wet inside, which comes from drying it head-up. Hanging it bristle-down on the cord it comes with is the whole preventive measure.

Is goat hair too rough for sensitive skin?

This is the soft grade, and the uncut tips are the point: an uncut hair ends in a natural taper, so it bends against the skin instead of scraping it, which is what a cut nylon tip does. That said, if your skin is reactive, start on the T-zone twice a week rather than the whole face daily.

Can I use it with any cleanser?

Yes — foaming cleansers, cleansing creams and bar soap all work, and bar soap actually lathers particularly well on a brush. Avoid granular scrubs: the grains lodge in the base of the bristles and grind there.
