Description

Lion Systema Sonic Assist Brush — About 9,000 Vibrations a Minute

Overview

About 9,000 vibrations a minute, from one AAA battery, in a handle that weighs about as much as a manual toothbrush. Lion calls this an assist brush rather than an electric one, and the word is doing real work: you brush with it the way you brush by hand, and the vibration adds to the stroke rather than replacing it.

That is the design argument. A rotating-head brush asks you to hold it still against each tooth and learn a new habit; this one asks you to change nothing and adds sonic vibration to the technique you already have. The head is thin and compact so it moves easily behind the back molars, and the handle is slim enough to rinse under a tap without a docking station.

Three Lion refill head types fit it, all sold separately: Wide Premium for coverage, Clinica Advantage with a 2.6 mm ultra-fine head for deep between the molars, and Nonio + Whitening with multi-faceted bristles.

Who Is This For?

  • Someone who wants sonic assistance without relearning how to brush
  • Travellers — a battery brush has no charging base to pack and no flat battery on day three
  • Anyone who finds full-size electric brushes too bulky at the back of the mouth
  • Someone already using Lion Systema, Clinica or Nonio refill heads
  • Not for you if you want a rechargeable brush with a timer, a pressure sensor and modes — this brush has none of those, by design

How to Use

  1. Fit one AAA alkaline battery in the base cap, matching the marks inside.
  2. Attach a compatible Lion refill head and apply a small amount of toothpaste.
  3. Switch on and brush as you would by hand, moving the head tooth by tooth.
  4. Switch off, rinse the head and handle under the tap, and stand it upright to dry.

Frequency: Twice a day, as you would with a manual brush.

Full Ingredients

Specification: sonic vibration of about 9,000 per minute measured with no load; power from one AAA alkaline battery; slim handle of around 20 g; thin compact brush head.

Compatible refill heads, all sold separately: Systema Wide Premium, a wide head for broad coverage; Clinica Advantage, whose 2.6 mm ultra-fine head is finer than a standard fine-bristle head and reaches deeper between molars, in a four-row tapered shape; and Nonio + Whitening, with multi-faceted star-section bristles that hold toothpaste and lift surface stains.

The exact contents of the box vary by production run; check the pack you receive for whether a trial head and battery are included. Manufactured by Lion. The design may differ slightly from the photograph.

Cautions

  • Do not press hard. This brush assists your stroke; pressing harder does not clean better and it wears both the bristles and your gums.
  • Rinse and dry the handle after use, and take the battery out if you are storing the brush unused for a long period — a leaking cell ruins the handle.
  • Replace the brush head roughly every three months, or sooner if the bristles splay.
  • Not a substitute for interdental cleaning. No toothbrush, sonic or otherwise, reaches between teeth the way floss or an interdental brush does.
  • If your gums bleed regularly, see a dentist rather than changing brush.

Package Contents

One Systema sonic assist brush handle. A trial refill head and a trial AAA battery are included in some production runs; check the pack you receive. Replacement heads and batteries are sold separately.

FAQ

Does it come with a battery?

It depends on the production run. Some Japanese packs include a trial AAA battery and a trial brush head, others do not, and our previous description said batteries must be bought separately. Buy a AAA alkaline battery alongside it and you cannot be caught out.

Is it rechargeable?

No, and that is the point of it. There is no charging base, which is why it packs flat for travel and why it cannot run out of charge — you change a battery instead.

How is this different from a rotating electric toothbrush?

A rotating brush does the cleaning motion for you and you hold it in place. This one vibrates while you brush in your usual way. Lion calls it an assist brush rather than an electric brush for exactly that reason, and if you like your current technique, it is the less disruptive of the two.

Which replacement heads fit?

Three Lion types: Systema Wide Premium, Clinica Advantage with the 2.6 mm ultra-fine head, and Nonio + Whitening. All are sold separately, and all three are stocked in Japan under the same brand family.

Will 9,000 vibrations a minute clean better than my manual brush?

It adds vibration to the technique you already use; how much that helps depends on how you brush now. What it does not do is replace flossing or an interdental brush, and no toothbrush does.
