Description

Savas Whey Protein 100, Cocoa, 1 kg — Japan's Default Gym Protein

Overview

Savas is Meiji's sports nutrition brand, and Whey Protein 100 is the product the rest of the range is measured against. In Japan it is the tub on the shelf of most gyms and most sports shops; the formulation is deliberately plain — whey protein, cocoa for flavour, a set of B vitamins and vitamin C, and very little else.

A serving is three tablespoons, about 21 g, in 200 to 300 ml of water or milk. The 1 kg tub therefore runs to roughly fifty servings. Meiji's own positioning is recovery and long-term daily use rather than a loading protocol, which is why the serving is modest by the standards of imported mass-gain powders.

Before anything else: this is milk. Whey is a milk protein and whey is most of what is in the tub. Milk and soy are both declared on this page, at the top of the Cautions and in the details table. If you have a dairy allergy, this is not a product for you.

Key Benefits

  • Whey protein — the fastest-absorbing common protein and the standard choice around training
  • A plain formulation: protein, cocoa, B vitamins and vitamin C, without a long list of extras
  • Roughly fifty 21 g servings per 1 kg tub, so the tub lasts
  • Dissolves cleanly in water or milk without the grittiness of cheaper cocoa powders
  • Meiji domestic-market product — the same tub sold in Japanese gyms, not an export reformulation
  • Milk and soy now declared on this page instead of being absent from the ingredient list

Who Is This For?

  • People training with weights who want a straightforward whey around sessions
  • Anyone who found imported protein powders too sweet — the Japanese cocoa version is noticeably less so
  • People who prefer a modest 21 g serving they take daily to a 40 g serving they take occasionally
  • NOT for you if you have a milk allergy: whey is a milk protein, and this product is mostly whey
  • NOT for you if you have a soy allergy — the emulsifier contains soy

How to Use

  1. Pour 200 to 300 ml of water or milk into a shaker first.
  2. Add three tablespoons of powder, about 21 g.
  3. Shake for around ten seconds. Water gives a lighter drink, milk a fuller one and more protein overall.
  4. Take it around training — after a session is the usual choice — or as a protein top-up at any point in the day.
  5. Close the tub properly and keep it dry. Whey powder cakes if it sits in a humid kitchen with the lid loose.

Frequency: Once daily is typical; more if your protein target needs it. Meiji positions it for long-term daily use.

Full Ingredients

Ingredients: whey protein (from milk), cocoa powder, dextrin, vegetable oil, salt, emulsifier (contains soy), vitamin C, flavouring, thickener (pullulan), sweeteners (sucralose, acesulfame K), niacin, vitamin B2, vitamin B1, vitamin B6, calcium pantothenate, folic acid, vitamin B12.

On the two allergens. The protein is the product, whey is a milk protein, and the emulsifier carries soy. Both are named here, in the details table and at the top of Cautions, because someone avoiding dairy needs to meet that fact before the ingredient list rather than inside it.

Per-serving nutrition. Meiji does not publish a gram-by-gram panel for this flavour in the data we hold, and we are not going to estimate one from another flavour. If you count macros precisely, ask us before ordering and we will photograph the Japanese nutrition panel on the tub we stock.

Ingredient list as declared by the manufacturer. Formulations are occasionally revised, so always read the panel printed on the tub you receive.

Cautions

  • Contains MILK. Whey is a milk protein and it is the main constituent of this product. Do not take it if you have a milk allergy.
  • Contains SOY in the emulsifier. Do not take it if you have a soy allergy.
  • Whey contains lactose. If you are lactose intolerant rather than milk allergic, a whey concentrate may still cause bloating or loose stools — start with half a serving and see.
  • Not intended for children. Meiji's serving is set for adults who exercise.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a kidney condition, ask your doctor before adding a daily protein supplement.
  • Keep the tub sealed and dry. Discard the powder if it has caked hard or smells sour.
  • Stop taking it and consult a doctor if you develop stomach upset, rash, unusual tiredness, muscle pain or dark urine.
  • Do not exceed the stated daily amount. More is not better with any of these ingredients.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
  • This is a food supplement, not a medicine. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, and it is not a substitute for prescribed treatment.

FAQ

Does this contain dairy?

Yes. Whey is a milk protein, and whey is what this product mostly is. We answer it at the top of the FAQ because the tub is sold on cocoa and protein, and someone avoiding dairy can reasonably scan a chocolate-flavoured powder without expecting milk in it. If you have a milk allergy, this is not a product for you. If you are lactose intolerant, see the note in Cautions.

How does it compare to Western protein powders?

Two practical differences. The serving is smaller — 21 g against the 30 to 40 g scoop typical of imported brands — because Meiji positions the product around daily recovery rather than maximum intake. And it is noticeably less sweet; Japanese flavouring is restrained, and people who find imported chocolate whey cloying usually get on with this. The protein itself is ordinary whey and behaves like ordinary whey.

Water or milk?

Water gives you the lighter drink and the cleaner cocoa flavour, and it keeps the calories to what is in the powder. Milk makes it fuller, adds its own protein and calcium, and suits it better as a between-meals drink than as a post-training one. Neither is wrong. If you are counting calories, use water; if you are trying to eat more overall, use milk.

Is it halal or suitable for vegetarians?

Vegetarian: yes, on the published list — whey is a dairy protein, not a meat one, and no gelatin or animal fat is declared. Vegan: no, for the same reason. On halal, the product carries no certification and Meiji does not publish the source of the emulsifier or the enzyme used in the whey processing, so we can tell you what is declared and no more. If certification is what you need, this product does not have it.

Why does the tub not show a full nutrition table on this page?

Because we could not verify one. Meiji does not publish a gram-by-gram panel for this flavour in the data we hold, and the alternative — copying the figures from a different Savas flavour and presenting them as this one's — is the kind of thing that makes product pages untrustworthy. Ask us before ordering and we will photograph the Japanese panel on the tub in our stock.
