This is not the NIVEA sunscreen sold in Europe. In Japan the NIVEA name is licensed to Kao, and the formulas are developed locally — different filter system, different texture philosophy, built for a climate where you sweat through August. The result is a watery gel that disappears without a cast and layers under makeup, which is why it sells the way it does in Japanese drugstores.

How to Use
- Apply as the last step of your morning routine, after moisturiser and before makeup.
- Use about a third of a teaspoon for the face and the same again for the neck — under-application is the single biggest reason a high SPF underperforms.
- Spread in sections rather than trying to cover the whole face in one pass, and do not forget ears, eyelids and hairline.
- Wait one to two minutes before makeup so the film sets.
- Reapply every two to three hours outdoors, and after swimming or towel-drying.
Frequency: Every morning you will see daylight, including through windows and on overcast days.

UV filters: bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine (Tinosorb S), diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate (Uvinul A Plus), ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (octinoxate), ethylhexyl triazone (Uvinul T), Polysilicone-15.
Other ingredients: water, ethanol, BG, caprylyl methicone, isopropyl palmitate, diisopropyl sebacate, glycerin, hydrolyzed conchiolin (pearl protein), Lonicera japonica flower extract, Leontopodium alpinum extract, sodium hyaluronate, Rosa damascena flower water, tocopherol, fragrance.
Ethanol sits second in the non-filter list and the formula is fragranced — neither was stated on our previous version of this page. Hydrolyzed conchiolin is derived from mollusc shell, so the formula is not vegan.

Cautions
- Contains ethanol (alcohol), which can sting dry or reactive skin — patch test first if your barrier is compromised.
- Contains animal-derived ingredients — not suitable for vegans.

- Contains octinoxate, which several coral-reef jurisdictions restrict. Check local rules before using it in the water on holiday.
- Water-resistant is not waterproof: reapply after swimming, heavy sweating or towelling.
- Patch test on the inner forearm before first use, especially if your skin is reactive.
- Discontinue use and consult a doctor if redness, itching, swelling or persistent stinging occurs.
- Avoid contact with the eyes. If the product enters the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water.

Is this the same as European NIVEA sun protection?
No, and the difference is more than packaging. In Japan the NIVEA trademark is licensed to Kao, which develops its own formulas for the domestic market. This one uses Tinosorb S and Uvinul A Plus alongside octinoxate and ethylhexyl triazone — a filter set you will not find in the same combination on a European NIVEA tube, and one built around Japanese texture expectations rather than European ones.
How much do I actually need to apply?
About a third of a teaspoon for the face and another third for the neck — roughly two finger-lengths of product squeezed along your index and middle fingers. Laboratory SPF ratings are measured at 2 mg per square centimetre, and most people apply a quarter to a half of that, which is why real-world protection falls far short of the number on the tube. Reapply every two to three hours outdoors, and after swimming or towelling off.
Can I use it if I am vegan, or if I am looking for halal cosmetics?
Not if you are vegan: hydrolyzed conchiolin is a protein extracted from mollusc shell. On halal, the product carries no certification — Japanese domestic cosmetics rarely do — and it also contains ethanol as a formulation ingredient. Opinions on both points vary, so we state the facts and leave the judgement to you.
The packaging is in Japanese — how do I know what I am using?
The carton and bottle carry Japanese-language labelling, because this is stock made for the Japanese domestic market. Where an ingredient list appears on this page, it is translated from that labelling or from the manufacturer's own published data; where the manufacturer does not publish one, the ingredients section says so rather than filling the gap.
