Panasonic ES-CWP97 — A Dual-Lamp IPL Device, and the Six Limits That Decide Whether It Will Work for You

Overview

The ES-CWP97 is Panasonic's twin-lamp home IPL device from its 光エステ line. Two lamps instead of one means each flash covers its area with less energy concentrated in any one spot, which is the gentler-feeling end of home IPL. The unit is rated for around 300,000 flashes, has five intensity levels, and ships with three heads: one for body and the bikini line, one for the face, and one for the inner bikini area.

It is a good device. It is also a device that fires light into skin, and the previous version of this page sold it with the line "If you are tired of constantly shaving hair, the best solution is a photoepilator!" and then gave two steps, a frequency table, and not a single safety limit. No eye warning. No skin-tone warning. No medication warning. Nothing about tattoos or moles. Nothing about what the supplied inner-bikini head must not touch. We have written those in, because on an IPL device they are not the small print — they are the instructions.

How the light actually works, because everything below follows from it. This is an IPL device: it fires a broad-spectrum flash that is absorbed by melanin, the dark pigment in the hair. The absorbed light becomes heat, the heat travels down the shaft to the follicle, and a follicle heated at the right point in its growth cycle produces a finer, slower hair next time. That is the whole mechanism, and two consequences fall straight out of it. First, the flash cannot tell the difference between melanin in a hair and melanin in skin — so the darker the skin, the more of the energy lands in the skin instead, which is why every IPL device restricts use by skin tone. Second, hair with little or no melanin gives the light nothing to grab: white, grey, red and very light blonde hair do not respond, at any setting, on anyone.

Read this before you order: this is a Japanese domestic-market appliance and it is built for 100 V. Japanese mains supply is 100 volts at 50 or 60 Hz, with a flat two-pin Type A plug. Most of Europe, the Middle East, Russia and Central Asia run at 220-240 V. Connecting a 100 V appliance to a 230 V socket through a plug adapter alone will destroy it, usually within seconds, and can cause a fire. A plug adapter changes the shape of the pins and nothing else. What you need is a step-down transformer rated comfortably above the appliance's wattage. If you are in North America (120 V) or Taiwan (110 V) the margin is small but it is still not 100 V, and the manufacturer does not certify use outside Japan. We would rather lose the sale than have you learn this after delivery.

One line has been deleted outright: "The photoepilator can be used not only in Japan but also abroad." It is a 100 V Japanese appliance. Read the paragraph above.

And one expectation reset. Home IPL is hair reduction, not permanent removal, and Japanese labelling for this category does not use the word 永久 — permanent. Used to schedule, most people get to noticeably less, finer, slower hair and stay there with occasional top-ups. Anyone promising you a permanently bare leg from a household appliance is selling you something.

Who Is This For?

• Right for you if your hair is black, dark brown or dark blonde and your skin is light to medium. That combination is what IPL is built around, and it is where the results are.
• Right for you if you can keep to a schedule — roughly fortnightly for the first two to three months, then every four to eight weeks. IPL only reaches follicles that are in their growth phase, which is why one session does very little and eight do a lot.
• Right for you if you are on 100 V or already own a step-down transformer.
• Not for you if your hair is white, grey, red or very light blonde. There is no melanin for the light to work on, and no intensity level changes that.
• Not for you if your skin is dark, or currently tanned. More melanin in the skin means more of the flash absorbed by skin rather than hair, and that is a burn. Check the skin-tone chart in the Japanese manual before the first use and ask us to translate it if you need.
• Not for you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking a photosensitising medication, have a photosensitivity disorder or epilepsy, or want to treat a tattooed area, a mole, or male beard growth.

How to Use

1. Check your mains voltage first. On 220–240 V, use a correctly rated step-down transformer, never a plug adapter alone.
2. Read the skin-tone chart in the manual and test on a small patch at a low level, then wait 24 hours before doing a whole area. Do this again for every new body area.
3. Shave the area the day before or the same day. Shave — do not wax, pluck, epilate or use depilatory cream, because IPL needs the hair still in the follicle to carry heat down to it.
4. Clean and dry the skin. No lotion, oil, deodorant, self-tan or makeup on the area.
5. Fit the correct head for the area. The face head is for below the cheekbones only.
6. Start at level 1 on a new area. Move up only if the previous session caused no lasting redness.
7. Press the window flat to the skin and flash, then move to the next patch without overlapping. The beep tells you the flash fired.
8. Afterwards: no hot bath, sauna, swimming pool or gym for the rest of the day, and daily sunscreen on any treated area that sees daylight for the next two weeks.

Frequency: Arms and legs: every 2 weeks for the first 3 months, then every 4–8 weeks. Underarms and bikini line: weekly for the first 2 months, then every 2 weeks. Do not treat the same area more often than this in the hope of faster results — the limit is the hair cycle, not the device.

Full Ingredients

An appliance, so no ingredient list. What belongs here instead is the part of the specification that decides whether it will work on you.

Hair colour. Works on black, dark brown and dark blonde hair. Does not work on white, grey, red or very light blonde hair, because there is no melanin in the shaft to absorb the flash. This is physics, not a setting.

Skin tone. IPL is restricted by skin tone on every device ever made, for the reason given in the Overview. Panasonic prints a skin-tone chart in the Japanese manual, and the honest instruction is to look at that chart rather than at a paragraph written by a shop. If you would like us to translate the chart before you order, ask — we would much rather do that than take a return for burns.

Areas the manufacturer excludes. Eyebrows and everything above the cheekbones. Lips and the eye area. Nipples and areolae. Mucous membranes — this matters for the supplied inner-bikini head, which is for skin only and must never be used on mucosa. Inside the nose or ears. Over tattoos, permanent makeup, dark moles, birthmarks or freckle clusters. Men's beard area.

Lamp life. Around 300,000 flashes, and the lamp is not a user-replaceable part, so that figure is effectively the life of the unit rather than a consumable interval.

Cautions

• Never flash near the eyes. Do not use on eyebrows, eyelids, the forehead or anywhere above the cheekbone line. The face head is for cheeks, upper lip, jaw and chin. Do not look into the window, and do not let anyone else watch the flash at close range.
• Do not use on dark or recently tanned skin. Melanin in skin absorbs the flash the same way melanin in hair does, and the result is a burn, a blister or a lasting pale or dark patch. No sunbathing and no tanning bed for two weeks before or after a session, and use sunscreen on treated areas in between.
• Do not use over tattoos, permanent makeup, dark moles, birthmarks, dense freckle clusters, or any pigmented lesion. Work around them, or cover them with a white pencil or an opaque plaster.
• Do not use on mucous membranes, the genital mucosa, the anus, the nipples or areolae, or inside the nose or ears. The supplied inner-bikini head is for skin only.
• Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding — home IPL has not been tested in pregnancy.
• Do not use if you take a photosensitising medication (isotretinoin and other oral retinoids, tetracycline antibiotics, some diuretics, St John's wort among others), or if you have a photosensitivity disorder such as porphyria or polymorphic light eruption. Check with your doctor or pharmacist about your own medication rather than assuming.
• Do not use if you have epilepsy or are sensitive to flashing light.
• Do not use over broken, sunburned, infected or actively inflamed skin, over active acne, over a recent scar, or on an area treated with a peel, laser or wax within the last two to four weeks.
• Do not use if you have an implanted electronic device, are being treated for cancer, or have a skin condition affecting the area — ask your doctor first.
• Not permanent hair removal. This is hair reduction, it requires ongoing top-up sessions, and results vary between people and between body areas.
• Japanese domestic 100 V appliance. On a 220-240 V supply it requires a step-down transformer; a plug adapter alone will destroy it and may cause a fire.
• Manual and all safety labelling are in Japanese only; no other language is supplied.

FAQ

Can I use it on my face and eyebrows?

On the face below the cheekbones, yes — that is what the face head is for, and it covers upper lip, cheeks, jaw and chin. On eyebrows, eyelids, the forehead or anywhere above the cheekbone line, no, and this is the warning the previous version of this page did not carry at all. IPL fires a bright flash of light that is absorbed by pigment, and the eye is full of pigment and sits behind a thin lid that does not stop it. Do not look into the window either, and do not let a curious child or partner watch from close up.

Will it work on my hair and skin?

It works on black, dark brown and dark blonde hair, on light to medium skin. It does not work on white, grey, red or very light blonde hair at any setting, because there is no melanin in the shaft for the light to be absorbed by. And it is restricted on dark skin, because melanin in the skin absorbs the same flash and turns it into heat where you do not want heat. Panasonic prints a skin-tone chart in the manual; ask us and we will translate it before you order. We would rather answer this question now than after a burn.

Will it work in my country?

Only through a properly rated step-down transformer. It is built for the Japanese 100 V supply. The old version of this page said the device "can be used not only in Japan but also abroad" — that line is now deleted, because on a 230 V supply with a plug adapter it will be destroyed and can start a fire. An adapter changes the shape of the pins and nothing else.

Is the hair gone permanently?

No, and we will not tell you otherwise. Home IPL is hair reduction: it makes hair finer, sparser and slower, and it needs top-up sessions to stay that way. Japanese labelling for this category deliberately avoids the word for permanent. The reason the schedule matters is that IPL only affects follicles that happen to be in their growth phase on the day, which is a minority of them at any moment — that is why eight fortnightly sessions do far more than one, and why stopping means the hair gradually comes back.

Will I pay customs duty or import VAT?

That depends on your country and on the declared value of the parcel, not on us.
