What DHC is permitted to claim
Goku Rakuraku EX is a Food with Function Claims, notification number I692. Two functional ingredients are declared, and the notified wording is:
Glucosamine hydrochloride has been reported to smooth the bending and straightening of the knee joint and to reduce discomfort in the knee, and to help promote normal metabolism of articular cartilage by suppressing excessive breakdown of cartilage components during exercise, thereby helping to protect articular cartilage. Black-ginger-derived polymethoxyflavone has been reported, in combination with exercise that places a light load on the muscles, such as bending and straightening the legs, to act on leg muscle strength that declines with age and so to help improve walking ability in middle-aged and older people.
The italicised condition is part of the claim and we keep it: the walking-ability function is notified together with light leg exercise, not from the tablets alone. This product does not treat any disease, and Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency has not individually assessed it.

One correction worth stating plainly: our earlier description credited this product with hydroxytyrosol and a paragraph about its antioxidant and antibiotic properties. Hydroxytyrosol does not appear anywhere in DHC's declaration. It has been removed. The chondroitin here comes from pork cartilage; the older, non-EX version of this product used shark cartilage, and the two are not the same formula.

FAQ
Does this contain hydroxytyrosol or olive extract?
No. Our previous description said it did and described its antioxidant and antibiotic properties at length. Hydroxytyrosol appears nowhere in DHC's published declaration, and we have removed the whole passage. The antioxidant-class ingredient that is present is 5-Loxin, a Boswellia serrata extract, at 60 mg per daily dose.
Why is the product called 'Effortlessly' on other sites?
Because 極らくらく roughly means 'extremely easy' and some listings translate it instead of transliterating it. It is a brand name. The product is Goku Rakuraku EX, and searching for that — or for JAN 4511413629703 — will find the right pack.
Will the tablets improve my walking on their own?
DHC's notified claim does not say so. The black-ginger polymethoxyflavone function is registered in combination with exercise that lightly loads the muscles, such as bending and straightening the legs. If you are not moving, the notified basis for that half of the product does not apply.
Is it suitable if I avoid pork?
No. The chondroitin source is a pork cartilage extract powder, which DHC declares. There is also milk (CBP), chicken cartilage, shrimp and crab in the formula, and a fish-derived elastin peptide.
How does it differ from the plain Goku Rakuraku?
Different formula. The non-EX version uses shark cartilage for chondroitin and a 6-tablet daily dose; the EX uses pork cartilage, 8 tablets, and adds the black-ginger component that carries the walking-ability notification. This page is the EX, per its 30-day 240-tablet pack.
