Overview

Most silicone scalp brushes have one problem: the bristles are soft the whole way through, so as soon as you press, they bend away and you feel almost nothing. ReFa's answer is a bristle with a firm core inside a matt silicone skin. The tip stays comfortable against the scalp while the core resists, so pressing actually delivers pressure into the tight tissue rather than being absorbed by the brush. It measures about 75 × 51 × 91 mm and weighs 75 g, which is small enough to hold in a closed hand.

It is designed to be used either way round: dry, on the scalp, as a few minutes of massage, or in the shower during shampooing, where it also works the lather down to the skin instead of leaving it sitting on the hair. It is waterproof and comes in several matt colourways.

How to Use

1. Dry use: part the hair with your free hand so the bristles reach the scalp rather than resting on the hair.
2. Set the brush down and move the scalp itself in small circles under it — do not drag the brush across the skin.
3. Work from the hairline back towards the crown, then from behind the ears up, then the nape.
4. In the shower: apply shampoo, then use the same circular motion to work the lather down to the skin before rinsing.
5. Rinse the brush and stand it to dry with the bristles facing down.

Frequency: Two to five minutes, once a day or whenever the scalp feels tight. It can be used at every shampoo.

Full Ingredients

This is a brush, not a formulation, so there is no ingredient list. The part that touches the scalp is matt silicone over an internal core — the core is what lets the bristles apply pressure instead of simply bending away, and it is the whole design idea. There is nothing applied to the skin and nothing absorbed.

Cautions

• Do not use on broken, inflamed or sunburned scalp, or over a scab, a wound or a mole you are watching.
• Stop using the brush if you get soreness, itching or persistent redness, and see a doctor if it does not settle.
• Do not scrub. Pressure comes from the core, so a light hand is enough; hard scrubbing on a scalp already shedding hair is counterproductive.
• Hair loss is a medical question. If you are shedding noticeably more than usual, or the scalp is scaly, see a dermatologist — no brush treats that.
• Do not hold a hairdryer on the brush: sustained hot air can deform the silicone.

What makes it different from a cheap silicone scalp brush?

The core. A plain silicone bristle is soft all the way through, so when you press it simply bends and the pressure never reaches your scalp — which is why those brushes feel pleasant and do very little. This one has a firm core inside the silicone, so the tip stays soft against the skin while the bristle itself resists. That is the entire design idea, and it is what you are paying for.

Will scalp massage make my hair grow?

There is no good evidence that brushing or massaging the scalp grows hair, and we are not going to tell you it does. What a scalp brush reliably does is relieve the tight, tender feeling many people get after a long day, and clean the scalp more thoroughly at shampoo time than fingertips manage through thick hair. If your concern is hair loss rather than comfort, the useful step is a dermatologist, who can tell you which of several very different causes you are dealing with.

Can I use it on wet hair with conditioner?

You can, and it is waterproof, but shampoo is where it earns its place: the point is to reach the scalp, and conditioner belongs on the lengths, not the roots. If you use it while conditioning, keep the brush on the scalp and off the mid-lengths, where wet hair is at its most fragile and any brushing risks breakage.

How do I clean and store it?

Rinse the rollers under running water after use — the device is waterproof — and dry them with a soft cloth rather than leaving water sitting in the fork. Do not use alcohol, solvent or an abrasive cleaner on the platinum coating. Store it dry, out of a hot car or a sunny windowsill for long stretches, and do not drop it: the rollers turn on a bearing and a hard knock is what usually ends a roller's life.
