ReFa CARAT is the roller the ReFa line began with, launched by MTG in 2008 and still the one most people picture when they hear the name. Two platinum-coated spheres on a Y-frame, a solar panel in the handle, 190 g, rated IPX7 so it can be used wet.
It is a massage tool. Rolling it over the face and body feels good, moves fluid about temporarily, and gives you a reason to spend three minutes on your jawline that you would otherwise not spend. Much of what circulates about this roller says a great deal more than that — hair growth, toxins, cellulite, collagen synthesis, pigmentation lightening — and none of it belongs on the page of a metal roller. How to Use
- Leave the handle in daylight or under a lamp for two to three hours before the first use, so the solar panel has charge.
- Apply a lotion, oil or cleanser first — the rollers glide better and pull less on the skin.
- Roll outward and upward: jaw to ear, cheek to temple, neck downward toward the collarbone.
- Use one sphere for the area under the eye and beside the nose; use both for the cheek, jaw, neck, arms and legs.
- Two to three minutes per area is plenty. Rinse and dry the rollers afterwards.
Frequency: Daily if you like. There is no dose to observe — it is a massage tool, not a treatment course.

On the microcurrent. The figure stated for this model is approximately 38 μA, which is a very small current — the sensation is a faint tingle, and many people notice nothing at all. We are reporting the specification, not making a claim about what that current does to skin. Retail copy for this roller credits the current with collagen synthesis, oxygen saturation, pigmentation lightening and hair growth; none of that is something a roller does.
On the platinum. Platinum is a low-sensitising, non-corroding metal, which is why it is used here. You will see the coating described elsewhere as preventing or eliminating any allergic reaction. No material eliminates any allergic reaction in anyone, and someone who does react deserves better than having been told in advance that it was impossible.
Cautions
- This is a cosmetic massage tool. It does not treat any medical or dermatological condition and does not reduce body fat.
- If you have a pacemaker, an implanted cardioverter-defibrillator or any other implanted electronic device, ask your doctor before using a device that produces a current — however small.
- Do not use over broken, inflamed, sunburned or recently treated skin, or over moles and raised lesions.
- Stop if the skin reddens, stings or feels sore. Rolling harder does not achieve more.
- Rated IPX7, but do not leave it submerged for longer than about 30 minutes.
- Do not use with scrubs or gritty exfoliants — abrasive particles damage the roller coating.
- In pregnancy, and immediately after childbirth or while breastfeeding, ask your doctor before use, and avoid the décolletage.
- Rinse and dry after use; do not store it wet.
- Keep out of reach of children.

FAQ
It doesn't seem to do anything — is it broken?
Almost certainly not. There is no battery: the microcurrent is generated by the solar panel in the handle, so the device needs to have been in light. Leave it on a windowsill or under a lamp for two to three hours and try again. The current is around 38 μA in any case, which is a faint tingle at most, and plenty of people never feel it. The rolling is doing the work you can feel.
Does it stimulate hair growth?
No. You will find copy claiming the microcurrent "acts on hair follicles, strengthening them and stimulating hair growth". Hair growth claims belong to regulated products, and a metal roller is not one. Rolling it over the scalp is pleasant and relieves tension, which is a fair reason to do it.
Will it get rid of cellulite or reduce fat?
No. Copy for this roller often says it reduces the appearance of cellulite and removes "waste and toxins". Neither is something a manual roller does. What rolling does is move interstitial fluid temporarily, which is why a face can look less puffy for a while afterwards — that is a real, short-lived effect and it is not fat reduction.
Can I use it in the bath?
Yes. It is rated IPX7, so water is not a problem, and the rollers glide better on wet skin or over a cleanser. Do not leave it lying in the water for more than about half an hour, and dry it afterwards rather than putting it away damp.
Is the platinum coating hypoallergenic?
Platinum is a low-sensitising metal that does not corrode, which is why it was chosen for the rollers. You will see the coating described as preventing any allergic reaction, and that is not a claim anyone can make about any material. If your skin reacts to it, stop using it — you would not be doing anything wrong.
