ReFa CARAT RAY — The Kneading Roller, Face and Body

Overview

CARAT RAY is MTG's attempt to move the roller on from a simple pinch to what a therapist calls kneading — the two rollers are shaped and angled to catch tissue more deeply and then release it as they turn, rather than skimming it. It is the version to choose if you found the original CARAT pleasant but superficial, or if most of your use is going to be on the body, where there is more tissue to get hold of. It is rated IPX7, so bath use is explicitly covered rather than merely tolerated.

The panel on the handle is a solar cell. In daylight or under room lighting it generates a microcurrent — a very weak current, of the order the body itself produces — which flows when the handle and the rollers are touching your skin at the same time. There is no battery and no charging: the device stores nothing, so it produces current only while there is light on the panel and none at all in a dark bathroom. That is a real limitation, not a detail, and it is why MTG tells you to use it in a bright place.

How to Use

1. Make sure there is light on the solar panel — daylight from a window or a bright room lamp.
2. Work on clean skin. A serum, oil or in-bath cleanser helps the rollers glide; on dry skin they drag.
3. Hold the handle so your palm is in contact with it, then set both rollers on the skin at once — the microcurrent only flows when handle and rollers are touching you together.
4. Roll outwards and upwards from the centre of the face, following the jaw line, then the cheek, then along the neck downwards towards the collarbone.
5. Use light pressure. The rollers are meant to pinch and lift the tissue, not to press it flat against the bone.

Frequency: Around one to three minutes per area, once or twice a day. Daily short sessions beat one long one.

Full Ingredients

This is a device, not a formulation, so there is no ingredient list. The parts that touch the skin are the two platinum-coated rollers and the body of the handle. There is nothing applied to the skin, nothing absorbed and nothing to react to chemically — the one remaining contact-sensitivity question is metal, which the FAQ below covers.

Cautions

• Do not use if you have a pacemaker or any other implanted electronic medical device. This is the standard exclusion for any device that generates a current, however weak.
• Do not use during pregnancy, or if you have a heart condition, are being treated for a skin condition, or have a metal allergy — the roller surface is platinum-coated.
• Do not roll over broken skin, active acne, eczema, a fresh scar, a mole you are watching, or anywhere that hurts.
• Avoid the eyeball, the front of the throat and the thyroid area.
• Stop immediately if you get redness that does not settle within an hour, bruising, tingling or discomfort.
• This is a massage tool. It is not a treatment for any medical condition, and it does not replace a doctor's or dermatologist's advice.
• Keep out of reach of children. Do not dismantle it or apply force to the rollers.

FAQ

Does it need batteries or charging?

Neither, and it cannot be charged. The solar panel converts light into a microcurrent in real time and the device has no storage of any kind, so there is nothing to run flat and nothing to plug in — but equally, there is no current in the dark. Use it by a window, under a bright lamp, or with the bathroom light on. Nothing about the physical rolling changes without light; only the microcurrent does.

What can I realistically expect from it?

A roller moves fluid and relaxes tight tissue. Used on the face, that means the puffiness people wake up with settles faster and the jaw and cheek muscles feel less tight — a change you can see the same morning and which fades again over the day. What it does not do is change the structure of your face, lift skin permanently, or reduce fat. If a description of any roller promises those things, it is overpromising. Buy it as a pleasant, effective drainage and massage tool used daily, not as an alternative to a clinic.

Is the platinum coating a problem if I react to jewellery?

Platinum itself is among the least reactive metals used against skin, which is why MTG chose it, but a coating is a coating: if it wears through at a contact edge after years of daily use, the substrate beneath is exposed. If you react to costume jewellery or have a known nickel allergy, test the rollers on your inner forearm for a few days before using them on your face, and stop if you see redness that outlasts the session.

How do I clean and store it?

Rinse the rollers under running water after use — the device is waterproof — and dry them with a soft cloth rather than leaving water sitting in the fork. Do not use alcohol, solvent or an abrasive cleaner on the platinum coating. Store it dry, out of a hot car or a sunny windowsill for long stretches, and do not drop it: the rollers turn on a bearing and a hard knock is what usually ends a roller's life.

Will I pay customs duty or import VAT?

That depends on your country and on the declared value of the parcel, not on us.
