Overview
V Rohto Gold 40 Mild is Rohto's eye drop for middle-aged and older eyes, and it is the version without menthol — the "freshness index 0" on the box means no cooling sting at all. Rohto formulates all six of its actives at the maximum concentration Japanese rules allow for an OTC drop.
In Japan it is a class 3 over-the-counter medicine, the mildest of the three OTC categories. The previous version of this page described it as treating eye infections and preventing eye disease and ageing. It does not do those things, and the approved indications are set out below instead.

How to Use
- Wash your hands.
- Tilt your head back and pull the lower lid down gently.
- Instil one drop into each eye without letting the nozzle touch the eye or lashes.
- Blink once or twice and close the eyes for a moment rather than squeezing them.
- Cap the bottle immediately; do not share it with anyone else.
Frequency: Two to five times a day, one or two drops each time, per the Japanese insert.

Cautions
- This is a Japanese over-the-counter medicine, not a cosmetic or a supplement. The box and the package insert are in Japanese only. It has not been assessed by the FDA, EMA, MHRA or any regulator outside Japan, and many countries restrict or prohibit the personal import of medicines. - Do not use if you have been diagnosed with glaucoma.
- Do not use alongside another eye medicine, or if you have had an allergic reaction to eye drops before.

Does it treat an eye infection?
No. That claim was on the previous version of this page and it was wrong. The Japanese approval covers eye fatigue, blurred vision with discharge, conjunctival congestion, blepharitis, itching, light-induced ophthalmia, and prevention of eye disease in the narrow sense of rinsing after swimming or after dust or sweat gets in. An eye infection needs a doctor.
What is "freshness index 0"?
Rohto's own scale for how cooling a drop feels. Zero is the bottom of it: no menthol, no sting. If you have avoided Japanese eye drops because they feel like a slap, this is the one to try.
How is Mild different from ordinary Gold 40?
Same six actives at the same maximum strengths. The difference is the sensation — the standard version is cooling, this one is not.
Can I wear soft contact lenses?
The pack states compatibility with hard lenses. For soft lenses, follow the Japanese insert; when in doubt, instil before putting the lenses in.
Can this be shipped to me?
