Description

Rohto Mentholatum Moisturising and Nourishing Hand Cream, 70 g — Japanese Hand Care for Very Dry Skin

Overview

A 70 g tube from Rohto's Mentholatum hand-care range, aimed squarely at hands that are dry because they are washed constantly — nurses, cooks, cleaners, parents, anyone through a Japanese winter. Dipotassium glycyrrhizinate keeps irritated skin calm, tocopherol acetate (vitamin E) is the antioxidant, and two molecular sizes of hyaluronic acid hold water at different depths of the outer layer.

The texture is a light veil rather than an ointment, which is the point: a cream you can reapply after every hand wash without your hands feeling coated. It has a faint mint scent. See also our Japanese hand care and Japanese moisturisers.

Key Benefits

  • ✓ Two molecular weights of hyaluronic acid, so water is held at more than one depth of the outer skin layer
  • ✓ Dipotassium glycyrrhizinate, the standard Japanese calming ingredient for skin that has been over-washed
  • ✓ Tocopherol acetate (vitamin E) as the antioxidant component
  • ✓ Light, quickly absorbed veil rather than a heavy ointment — reapplication after every hand wash is practical
  • ✓ Generous 70 g tube at a Japanese drugstore price, not a boutique one
  • ✓ Shipped from our base in Kobe, Japan with tracking, in the Japanese domestic packaging

Who Is This For?

  • Hands dry and tight from frequent washing, sanitiser or detergent contact
  • Anyone working in healthcare, catering, cleaning or childcare, where hands are washed dozens of times a day
  • Winter dryness and the roughness that comes with indoor heating
  • People who dislike heavy ointments and therefore skip hand cream altogether
  • Not the right product for open cracks, bleeding or infected skin — see a doctor for those

How to Use

  1. Wash and dry your hands.
  2. Squeeze out a pea-sized amount for both hands.
  3. Spread it over the backs of the hands, then the palms, then work into the fingers and around the nails.
  4. Reapply after each hand wash, and use a more generous amount as the last step before bed.

Frequency: As often as needed through the day, and always after washing your hands and before sleep.

Full Ingredients

Actives as described by the manufacturer: dipotassium glycyrrhizinate, tocopherol acetate (vitamin E).

Other declared ingredients include: two molecular weights of hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate and hydrolysed hyaluronic acid), hydrolysed collagen, aloe vera extract, vitamin B6, glycerin, menthol, fragrance.

Rohto does not publish the complete list for this SKU online, and the Mentholatum hand range contains several closely related tubes at 70 g. What is above is what the manufacturer discloses; read the list printed on the tube you receive, and note that the hydrolysed collagen is animal-derived.

Cautions

  • Contains animal-derived ingredients — not suitable for vegans.
  • Contains menthol or mint oil, which can sting reactive skin — patch test first if your skin is easily irritated.
  • This is a cosmetic moisturiser, not a wound treatment: do not apply it to open cracks, bleeding skin, burns or infected areas.
  • Discontinue use and consult a doctor if redness, itching, swelling or persistent stinging occurs.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes. If the product enters the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
  • Do not apply to broken, sunburned or actively inflamed skin.
  • Keep out of reach of children. Store away from direct sunlight and high temperatures.

Package Contents

FAQ

Will this heal cracked, bleeding hands?

It will help them stay comfortable and hold water, which is most of what dry, over-washed hands need. It will not heal a wound. If your hands are split open, bleeding, weeping or infected, that is a job for a dermatologist and, often, for a prescription — a moisturising cream applied to broken skin usually just stings. Once the skin has closed, this is exactly the sort of product that stops it opening again: apply after every wash, and wear gloves for wet work.

Is this product halal or suitable for vegans?

Contains animal-derived ingredients — not suitable for vegans. The product carries no halal certification — Japanese domestic cosmetics are rarely certified — so if certification itself matters to you, this product does not have it.

Why does the packaging say 'medicinal' if the status here is unverified?

Rohto's Mentholatum hand range includes both plain cosmetics and registered Japanese quasi-drugs, and several of the 70 g tubes look almost identical. Rather than guess, we have marked the regulatory status as unverified: the tube you receive will state its own class in Japanese, and we will happily read it for you from a photo. What is not in doubt is the ingredient function — a calming glycyrrhizinate plus vitamin E and two hyaluronic acids.

The packaging is in Japanese — how do I know what I am using?

The carton and bottle carry Japanese-language labelling, because this is stock made for the Japanese domestic market. Where an ingredient list appears on this page, it is translated from that labelling or from the manufacturer's own published data; where the manufacturer does not publish one, the ingredients section says so rather than filling the gap. Either way, send us a photo of anything unclear on the box after delivery and we will translate it, and ask us before ordering if you need the full label list first.

Will I pay customs duty or import VAT?

That depends on your country and on the declared value of the parcel, not on us. We ship from Japan with a correct customs declaration and full tracking; any duty or import VAT your country charges is collected by your local carrier or customs office on delivery. Check your national de-minimis threshold before ordering if you want to avoid a surprise.
