RyuSpa Kumi Cream comes from a specific place, and the place is the point. 球美 (Kumi) is the old name of Kume Island — Kumejima — off Okinawa, and Ryu Spa's whole line is built on Kumejima deep-sea water. The maker's phrase for the idea is 琉漢発想の美, Ryū-kan: 琉 for Ryukyu, 漢 for kanpō, Okinawan botanicals read through Chinese herbal thinking.

How to Use

1. Apply as the final step of your morning or evening routine, after toner and serum.
2. Take a pearl-sized amount, about 0.3–0.5 g.
3. Warm it between the palms and press it onto face and neck with patting motions.
4. Layer a second application on the areas that stay dry — cheeks and the corners of the mouth are the usual ones.
5. In the morning, follow with sunscreen on top. The citrus oils in this cream are a reason to, not an optional extra.

FAQ

What does "Kumi" mean?

球美, read Kumi, is the classical name of Kume Island — Kumejima — in Okinawa. Ryu Spa's whole 球美 line is built around Kumejima deep-sea water. An earlier version of this page never mentioned the island and described the cream as generically "inspired by Okinawan botanical wisdom", which loses the one fact that makes the name mean something.

What is chōmeisō?

Peucedanum japonicum, called 長命草 — literally "long-life herb" — and grown across Okinawa. In this cream it is fermented with lactic acid bacteria and soy milk before it goes in. The Japanese name and the botanical name are the same plant, so the fermented chomeiso in the benefits and the Lactobacillus ferment in the ingredient list are one thing, not two.

Is this suitable for sensitive skin?

Not especially, and we would rather say so. There is fragrance in it plus six essential oils — bergamot, bitter orange, sandalwood, marjoram, geranium and atlas cedar. The ceramide and barrier-lipid set is genuinely good for a compromised barrier, but reactive skin often reacts to exactly the things that make this cream smell the way it does. Patch test, properly, before you commit.

Is it a treatment or a moisturiser?

A moisturiser. It is registered as a cosmetic, not a quasi-drug, so it has no approved active and no approved medicinal effect. What it does have is a complete barrier-lipid set — three ceramides with cholesterol and phytosphingosine — which is the honest reason to buy it.
