Description

Ryu Spa Resort Moisture Milk 150 ml — Okinawan Fucoidan Emulsion

Overview

A light moisturising milk from Ryu Spa, a Japanese brand built around Okinawan raw materials. The base is deep sea water drawn from 612 metres off Kumejima Island, and the signature ingredient is fucoidan from mozuku seaweed — the slippery brown algae Okinawa is known for. Fucoidan is a polysaccharide, and like other polysaccharides it is a humectant: it holds water at the skin surface.

Around that sit hyaluronic acid, glycerin, betaine, jojoba oil and squalane, plus camellia placenta, pineapple and acerola extracts. The texture is genuinely light — it absorbs quickly and does not leave a film, which makes it a reasonable emulsion step for anyone who finds creams too heavy. It is scented with natural essential oils, so it is not a fragrance-free product. See also our moisturizers. Ships from Kobe, Japan.

Who Is This For?

  • Your skin feels dry and tight after cleansing and a cream feels like too much
  • You want a well-hydrated base under sunscreen in the morning
  • You like plant-forward Japanese formulas and enjoy a light citrus-herbal scent
  • You are curious about fucoidan and want it in a leave-on step rather than a supplement
  • Not for you if you need a fragrance-free routine, or if citrus and lavender oils have irritated your skin before

How to Use

  1. Cleanse and apply your lotion or toner first — milk goes on after the watery step.
  2. Dispense one pump (about 1 ml) into your palm.
  3. Spread evenly over the face, avoiding the immediate eye area.
  4. Press in gently with the fingertips until absorbed.
  5. Follow with a cream at night if your skin still feels dry, and with sunscreen in the morning.

Frequency: Twice daily, morning and evening

Full Ingredients

Full declared ingredients: Water, glycerin, glycosyl trehalose, jojoba oil, squalane, hydrolyzed starch, betaine, hyaluronic acid, soluble and hydrolyzed collagen, extracts: Okinawan seaweed, passion fruit, acerola, aloe vera, pineapple, red seaweed, artichoke, camellia placenta, ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate, tocopherol, essential oils: shikuwasa, mandarin, orange, bergamot, lavender, rosemary, Atlas cedar.

Two things are worth reading carefully here. First, camellia placenta is plant material — it is the placenta of the camellia flower, not animal placenta. People often assume the worst from the word alone, so it is worth stating plainly. Second, the collagen is not plant material: hydrolysed and soluble collagen are animal-derived, and the manufacturer does not state the source. Scented with a natural essential-oil blend rather than synthetic fragrance, which is a preference, not a safety claim — essential oils are common sensitisers.

Cautions

  • Scented with natural essential oils including bergamot, orange and mandarin — essential oils are common contact allergens and 'natural' does not mean non-irritating
  • Citrus oils can raise sun sensitivity; use sunscreen during the day, which you should be doing anyway
  • Contains hydrolysed and soluble collagen of animal origin — not suitable for a vegan routine and not halal-certified
  • Contains pineapple and passion fruit extracts; take care if you have a known fruit-enzyme sensitivity
  • Patch test on the inner forearm before first use, especially on sensitive or reactive skin
  • Avoid the immediate eye area; rinse with water if the product gets into the eyes
  • Stop use if redness, itching or stinging develops; store away from direct sunlight and heat, out of reach of children

FAQ

Is camellia placenta an animal ingredient?

No. It comes from the camellia flower — placenta here is the plant tissue at the base of the flower, not animal placenta. This is the single most common question about the product and the answer is a plain no. The animal-derived ingredient in this formula is the collagen, not the camellia.

What does fucoidan actually do on the skin?

It is a polysaccharide from brown seaweed and it works as a humectant: it binds water and helps hold it at the skin surface, in the same broad way glycerin and hyaluronic acid do. That is a real and useful function. Claims that it regenerates cells or reverses ageing belong to laboratory research on isolated cells, not to a bottle of moisturiser.

Is this a moisturiser or do I still need a cream?

It is a full moisturising step on its own for most people in mild weather, and it is deliberately light. If your skin is very dry, or it is winter, use it as the emulsion step and add a cream on top at night. If your skin is oily or combination, the milk alone is often enough.

Is it halal or vegan?

Neither. The formula contains hydrolysed and soluble collagen, which is animal-derived, and the manufacturer does not state the source. There is no halal certification. The rest of the formula is plant and marine material, but the collagen alone rules it out for a vegan or halal-only routine.

Will the scent be strong?

It is a natural essential-oil blend of citrus, lavender, rosemary and Atlas cedar — noticeable when you apply it and largely gone within a few minutes. If you are fragrance-sensitive, be aware that essential oils are fragrance: a product scented this way is not a low-fragrance product.
