How to Use
- Shake the tube gently before each use.
- Dispense generously. Japanese dermatology teaching is roughly two finger-lengths (about 2 mg/cm²) for face and neck — most people under-apply sunscreen by half.
- Smooth evenly over clean, moisturised skin as the final step of your morning routine, before makeup.
- For the body, use about a teaspoon per limb section.
- Reapply every two to three hours in the sun, and after swimming, heavy sweating, or towel-drying.
Frequency: Daily, year-round. Reapply every 2–3 hours during sun exposure. Removes with regular face wash or body soap.

Two things worth reading carefully. First, the formula contains ethanol, listed second — that is what gives the gel its cool, fast-drying feel, and it is also the most common reason people find Anessa stings. Second, on the UV filters: this formula contains no oxybenzone and no octinoxate, the two filters restricted in Hawaii and Palau. It does contain octocrylene, which is a separate filter with its own environmental discussion, so we describe the formula by what is in it rather than calling it reef-safe.
The botanical extracts in this formula are tea leaf, peony root (Paeonia albiflora) and tormentil root (Potentilla erecta).

What changed between the 2024 NA gel and this 2026 NB gel?
NA introduced Auto Repair Technology and the Beauty Sun Essence botanicals. NB keeps both and adds Auto Moist Balance Technology, which releases moisture back to the skin when the film detects dryness. The SPF50+ PA++++ rating and the 80-minute water resistance are unchanged.
Gel or milk — which should I buy?
The gel is cooler, lighter and dries faster, which is why it dominates in humid weather. The milk is a fluid emulsion with a slightly more matte finish and suits drier skin and cooler months. The ratings are identical.
Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
It is a chemical-filter sunscreen with ethanol high in the list, so it is not the gentle option. If your skin reacts to alcohol or to filters like octocrylene, a mineral formula will serve you better — we stock several.
Do I need an oil cleanser to remove it?
No. Shiseido's own instruction is that ordinary face wash or body soap is enough. An oil cleanser does no harm if you are also removing heavy makeup.
