How to Use
- Wash and dry your hands.
- Squeeze out roughly a pea-sized amount for both hands.
- Warm it briefly between the palms, then work it over the backs of the hands first — that is where sun marks form — and finish with fingers, cuticles and knuckles.
- Apply again after every hand wash if you can, and always as the last thing before bed.
Frequency: Several times a day as needed, and always before bed. Brightening actives need consistency, so daily use matters more than quantity.

Two points the previous version of this page got wrong. 4MSK is potassium 4-methoxysalicylate, not a methoxybenzoic acid salt. And the saxifrage and rosehip extracts are supporting ingredients, not approved actives — nothing in Japan's approval covers them.

What is 4MSK, and is the brightening effect real?
4MSK is potassium 4-methoxysalicylate, a whitening active Shiseido developed and had approved by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in 2003. It works on two fronts: it slows melanin production in the pigment cells and helps normalise the turnover of melanin-loaded cells in the outer layer, so marks are less likely to darken and settle. The approved Japanese claim is prevention of spots and freckles — not the erasure of pigmentation you already have. On hands, where sun exposure is constant and sunscreen is rarely reapplied, prevention is the realistic goal.
What does "quasi-drug" mean on a Japanese label?
Quasi-drug (iyakubugaihin) is a Japanese regulatory category that sits between cosmetics and medicines. A product enters it by naming specific active ingredients at approved concentrations, and it may then state the effect those actives were approved for. It is not a medicine and it is not a promise of a result on your skin. Outside Japan the same product is normally imported and sold as an ordinary cosmetic.
