Description

TSUBAKI Premium Repair Hair Mask, 180 g — Japanese Camellia Oil Treatment for Damaged Hair

Overview

The rinse-out treatment step of the TSUBAKI Premium Repair line, in a 180 g jar. Camellia (Camellia japonica) seed oil is the ingredient the brand is built on, and it sits here alongside a cationic conditioning system, amino-acid derivatives, acetylated hyaluronic acid, soy protein and hydrolysed conchiolin — the ingredient the brand markets as pearl protein.

A note on the brand: TSUBAKI is no longer a Shiseido product. Shiseido sold its consumer haircare business, and this mask is manufactured by Fine Today. The product handle on our site still begins with "shiseido-" for historical reasons; the manufacturer on the box is Fine Today. See also our Japanese haircare and Japanese masks.

Key Benefits

  • ✓ Camellia japonica seed oil, the traditional Japanese hair oil, in a rinse-out mask format rather than a leave-in
  • ✓ Full ingredient list published on this page — including the allergens the marketing copy tends to leave out
  • ✓ Cationic conditioning system plus acetylated hyaluronic acid: hair feels smoother and combs more easily wet
  • ✓ Generous 180 g jar at a Japanese drugstore price, not a salon one
  • ✓ Works as a weekly deep-conditioning step for heat-styled or colour-treated hair
  • ✓ Shipped from our base in Kobe, Japan with tracking, in the Japanese domestic packaging

Who Is This For?

  • Dry, coarse or colour-treated hair that feels rough from mid-length to ends
  • Hair regularly exposed to heat — blow-drying, straightening or curling
  • Anyone who wants a weekly treatment step rather than only a conditioner
  • People new to Japanese haircare looking for a well-known starting point at a low price
  • Not for you if you are allergic to bee products, soy or shellfish — the formula contains royal jelly extract, soybean seed extract and hydrolysed conchiolin from pearl oyster

How to Use

  1. Shampoo and rinse, then squeeze the excess water out of your hair with your hands. The mask cannot get into hair that is dripping wet.
  2. Take a walnut-sized amount for medium-length hair, more for long or thick hair.
  3. Work it through from mid-length to ends. Keep it off the scalp — this is a cuticle treatment, not a scalp product, and it will weigh roots down.
  4. Comb through with a wide-tooth comb so it is distributed evenly.
  5. Leave for three to five minutes.
  6. Rinse thoroughly until the hair no longer feels slippery.

Frequency: Once or twice a week in place of your conditioner. Daily use of a mask this rich tends to weigh fine hair down.

Full Ingredients

Full manufacturer-declared ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Dimethicone, Isopentyldiol, Hydrogenated Rapeseed Alcohol, Behentrimonium Chloride, Stearyl Alcohol, Sorbitol, Aminopropyl Dimethicone, Hydroxyethyl Urea, Alkyl (C12,14) Oxyhydroxypropyl Arginine HCl, Steartrimonium Chloride, Lactic Acid, Camellia Japonica Seed Oil, Sodium Chloride, Di(Phytosteryl/Octyldodecyl) Lauroyl Glutamate, Sodium Dilauroyl Glutamate Lysine, Royal Jelly Extract, Soybean Seed Extract, Acetylated Sodium Hyaluronate, Hydrolysed Conchiolin, Isopropanol, Cetanol, Octyldodecanol, Ethanol, Citric Acid, Ammonium Lactate, Lauryltrimonium Chloride, Butylene Glycol, Dipropylene Glycol, AMP, Amodimethicone, PPG-2-Deceth-12, Tocopherol, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, Fragrance, Red 227, Yellow 4.

Three of those deserve a plain-language note, because the previous version of this page advertised them without one. Royal jelly extract is a bee product. Soybean seed extract is what the marketing calls soy protein. And hydrolysed conchiolin — the "pearl protein" — is a protein extracted from pearl-oyster shell, so it is animal-derived and relevant if you have a shellfish allergy.

Cautions

  • Contains a bee-derived ingredient (royal jelly) — avoid if you are allergic to bee products.
  • Contains soy-derived ingredients — avoid if you have a soy allergy.
  • Contains hydrolysed conchiolin, a protein taken from pearl-oyster shell — relevant if you have a shellfish allergy or avoid animal-derived ingredients.
  • Contains animal-derived ingredients — not suitable for vegans.
  • Contains two colourants (Red 227 and Yellow 4) and fragrance — worth knowing if you react to either.
  • Keep off the scalp and out of the eyes. Rinse thoroughly — leaving a cationic conditioner on the skin can irritate it.
  • Discontinue use and consult a doctor if redness, itching, swelling or persistent stinging occurs.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes. If the product enters the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
  • Do not apply to broken, sunburned or actively inflamed skin.
  • Keep out of reach of children. Store away from direct sunlight and high temperatures.

FAQ

Can a mask repair damaged hair?

Not in the sense of rebuilding it. Hair above the scalp is not living tissue and it cannot heal: a split end stays split until it is cut off. What a good mask does is fill and smooth the outer cuticle layer, coat the surface so strands slide past each other instead of catching, and hold water in the fibre — so hair combs more easily, tangles less, breaks less on the brush and reflects light better. That is worth having and it is not the same as repair. Nothing in a jar reverses damage; a haircut does.

Is this product halal or suitable for vegans?

The formula contains royal jelly extract, a bee product, and hydrolysed conchiolin, a protein taken from pearl-oyster shell. Both are animal-derived, so the mask is not vegan and not suitable if you avoid animal ingredients on religious grounds. It also contains ethanol and isopropanol. The product carries no halal certification — Japanese domestic cosmetics are rarely certified — so if certification itself matters to you, this product does not have it.

Is this the same product Shiseido used to sell?

It is the same brand and the same line, but the company behind it changed. Shiseido divested its consumer haircare business, and TSUBAKI is now made by Fine Today — that is the manufacturer printed on the box you will receive. Our product URL still starts with "shiseido-" because changing a live URL breaks links and search rankings, so we have left the address alone and corrected the description instead. If the manufacturer name on the carton matters for your purchase, this is the one to expect.

The packaging is in Japanese — how do I know what I am using?

The carton and bottle carry Japanese-language labelling, because this is stock made for the Japanese domestic market. Where an ingredient list appears on this page, it is translated from that labelling or from the manufacturer's own published data; where the manufacturer does not publish one, the ingredients section says so rather than filling the gap. Either way, send us a photo of anything unclear on the box after delivery and we will translate it, and ask us before ordering if you need the full label list first.

Will I pay customs duty or import VAT?

That depends on your country and on the declared value of the parcel, not on us. We ship from Japan with a correct customs declaration and full tracking; any duty or import VAT your country charges is collected by your local carrier or customs office on delivery. Check your national de-minimis threshold before ordering if you want to avoid a surprise.
