The Bright Cleansing Oil is shu uemura's February 2026 launch and the first oil in the range built specifically around radiance rather than around a skin type. Where the Ultime8 oil is the all-purpose member of the family, Bright is the one aimed at a dull, uneven-looking complexion: it lifts makeup, pore grime and the clinging dead cells that flatten the surface, in a single pass, without the tight feeling that usually follows.
Its Bright Complex is four skin-conditioning ingredients — sake lees extract from Ishikawa Prefecture yaezakura yeast, Bifida ferment, a vitamin C derivative and bisabolol from chamomile. How to Use
- Use on a dry face. You may use it with wet hands — shu uemura states this explicitly, and it is one of the reasons the oil is quick to use.
- Dispense 4 pumps into your hand and massage gently over the whole face.
- Add a little water or lukewarm water and keep massaging until the whole face turns milky. This is the emulsification step and it is the one people skip.
- Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
- Do not follow with a face wash. shu uemura formulates these as one-step cleansers (W洗顔不要) — makeup removal and cleansing in a single pass. A second cleanse is the thing the formula is built to make unnecessary.
Frequency: 4 pumps, once daily in the evening. No second cleanse afterwards.

Two things worth knowing before you order. The signature ingredient, 酒粕エキス, is sake lees — the solids left after rice wine is pressed. It is a food-grade brewing by-product and it is what gives the oil its faint sake note. And the formula declares limonene alongside fragrance, which is the component most often behind a fragrance reaction.
No animal-derived ingredients. Bifida Ferment Lysate is bacterial, not dairy. Preserved with sodium benzoate and phenoxyethanol.
Cautions
- For external use. Avoid the eye area, and if the product gets into your eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
- Do not use on broken or irritated skin. Stop use if redness, itching or irritation appears, and patch test first if your skin is sensitive.
- Contains fragrance. The declared fragrance components are listed in the ingredients above — if you react to fragrance in skincare, read that list before ordering rather than after.
- Contains sake lees extract, a by-product of rice-wine brewing. If you avoid ingredients derived from alcohol production, this is the line to read.

- shu uemura's claims for these oils are made about the stratum corneum — the outermost layer of the skin. Where the brand's Japanese copy says "foundation" (土台), it footnotes it as the stratum corneum, and this page keeps it there.

That depends on where you draw the line. The oil contains 酒粕エキス — sake lees, the pressed solids left over from brewing rice wine. It is a brewing by-product rather than drinking alcohol, and there is no ethanol listed in the formula, but the ingredient's origin is what it is and we would rather you decided with the fact in front of you.
How is this different from the Ultime8 oil?
Ultime8 is the all-purpose one — the long-standing bestseller, aimed at several concerns at once, with camellia oil at its centre. Bright is narrower: it is aimed at dullness and uneven tone, built on fermented ingredients, and its texture is slightly lighter. If your skin looks flat rather than dry, Bright is the one. Note also that Ultime8 contains soybean oil and Bright does not, which matters if you avoid soy.
