Description

Lion Clinica Advantage Cool Mint Toothpaste, 130 g

Overview

Clinica Advantage Cool Mint is a Japanese fluoride toothpaste from Lion, 130 g, sold in Japan as a quasi-drug (medicated) product. It is the strongest of the three on cooling: a clean peppermint hit that stays in the mouth for a while after you rinse. This is the default choice, and the one to pick if the point of brushing in the morning is to feel awake.

The same paste is also sold as Soft Mint and Citrus Mint — the formula does not change, only the flavour. All three sit in our oral care range.

The number that matters on this tube is 1450 ppm of fluoride, as sodium fluoride — the upper end of what is sold over the counter for adults. What Lion actually engineered here is not the quantity but the retention: the Advantage line is built around a high-adhesion fluoride formulation intended to keep fluoride sitting on the tooth surface after you have finished brushing. Which leads to the single most useful instruction on this page, and it is free: spit, do not rinse. A mouthful of water after brushing washes away most of the fluoride you just paid for. Nothing in the formulation compensates for that.

One point worth being exact about, because it changes what you should do. This paste does not remove tartar, and nothing in a tube can. Tartar is plaque that has already mineralised — it is bonded to the tooth and comes off with a scaler, in a dental chair. What the sodium polyphosphate in this formula does is make it harder for new tartar to deposit. That is prevention, and it is worth having — but it is not a reason to stop booking cleanings.

Key Benefits

  • ✓ 1450 ppm of fluoride as sodium fluoride — the adult over-the-counter maximum in most markets
  • ✓ Built for fluoride retention, not just fluoride quantity: a high-adhesion formulation meant to stay on the tooth after brushing
  • ✓ Five medicated actives, each with a stated job — fluoride, anti-tartar polyphosphate, antibacterial, plaque-dissolving enzyme, deposit-dissolving macrogol
  • ✓ Dextranase attacks the glucan film that lets plaque grip the tooth, which brushing alone does not fully clear
  • ✓ Three flavours across one identical formula, so switching taste costs nothing in protection
  • ✓ 130 g — roughly three to four months for one adult brushing twice daily

Who Is This For?

  • You want a mint that is unmistakably there, and you brush first thing in the morning
  • You want the higher fluoride strength sold in Japan rather than a 1000–1100 ppm supermarket paste
  • Your dentist has told you plaque control, not whitening, is what your teeth need
  • You are buying for a household and want one formula in three flavours so nobody argues
  • Not for you if: you are shopping for a child under six as their only paste, or you want something that treats an existing problem rather than preventing new ones

How to Use

  1. Use a dry or barely damp brush. Wetting the brush under the tap dilutes the paste before it reaches a tooth.
  2. Adults and children over six: a strip roughly the length of the brush head. Children under six: a smear the size of a pea, with an adult watching.
  3. Brush for two full minutes, covering the outer, inner and biting surfaces, and angling the bristles into the gum line.
  4. Spit thoroughly. Do not rinse with water — leaving the fluoride film in place is the entire point of this formulation.
  5. Clean between the teeth with floss or an interdental brush. Nothing in the tube does this job.

Frequency: Twice a day, morning and last thing at night. The night brush is the one that matters most, because saliva flow drops while you sleep.

Full Ingredients

Medicated (active) ingredients, five in total: sodium fluoride (1450 ppm F), sodium polyphosphate, sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, dextranase, macrogol 4000 (PEG-4000).

Base: humectants (sorbitol solution, propylene glycol); abrasives (hydrated silica, silicon dioxide); foaming agent; flavour; viscosity modifier; stabiliser; binder; cooling agent; detergent; coating agent.

What each active is for. Sodium fluoride is the anti-cavity component. Sodium polyphosphate makes tartar harder to deposit. Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate is the antibacterial. Dextranase is an enzyme that breaks down the sticky glucan matrix plaque uses to hold on to teeth — this is the part a brush alone struggles with. Macrogol 4000 dissolves protein and tar deposits.

Two ingredients the old description named that are not in this formula: vitamin E and sodium bicarbonate. Neither appears in Lion's published composition for this line. They have been removed rather than corrected, because we could not establish where they came from.

Cautions

  • Fluoride 1450 ppm. In the EU and several other markets a paste at this strength carries a standing instruction: children under six should use a pea-sized amount at most, brush under adult supervision, and be taught to spit rather than swallow.
  • This is a toothpaste, not a treatment. It does not treat gum disease, cavities already formed, or sensitivity, and nothing on this page is dental advice.
  • It cannot remove tartar. Only a dental professional can.
  • Discontinue and ask a dentist or pharmacist if the mouth, gums or lips become sore, swollen or ulcerated after use.
  • Keep out of reach of small children. Swallowing a large amount of high-fluoride paste is a reason to contact a doctor or poison information service.
  • Not a substitute for cleaning between the teeth. Dextranase works on plaque the brush reaches; floss or interdental brushes reach what it does not.

FAQ

How much fluoride is in Clinica Advantage, and is that a lot?

1450 ppm, as sodium fluoride. It is the upper end of over-the-counter strength for adults — most supermarket pastes sit near 1000–1450 ppm and children's pastes far below. For an adult with a cavity history it is the right end of the range. For a child under six it is more than you want as a daily paste unless a dentist has said otherwise.

Does this toothpaste remove tartar?

No. Tartar is mineralised and comes off with a dental scaler. The polyphosphate in the formula makes new tartar harder to deposit, which is prevention, not removal.

Why should I not rinse after brushing?

Because this formula's selling point is that fluoride stays on the tooth surface after you finish, and a mouthful of water undoes that. Spit out the excess and leave the rest. If you find it unpleasant, rinse with the smallest amount you can tolerate rather than a full glass.

What is the difference between the three flavours?

Only the flavour. Cool Mint is the strongest cooling, Soft Mint is much gentler on menthol, Citrus Mint puts a citrus note over the mint. Fluoride level, actives and everything else are identical, so choose on taste alone.

Is it a medicine?

In Japan it is classified as a quasi-drug — a category between cosmetics and medicines that covers medicated toothpastes. In most of the markets we ship to it is sold as an ordinary cosmetic toothpaste. Either way it is a preventive product and does not treat disease.
