What "whitening" means on a Japanese toothpaste, because it is not what you think. Japanese whitening pastes — ホワイトニング — work by lifting and dispersing the stain film that sits on the outside of the enamel: the brown that coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco leave behind. They do this with polishing agents and with chemical dispersants such as polyphosphates and PEG. They contain no peroxide, and they do not and cannot change the natural colour of the tooth underneath, because that colour is dentine showing through translucent enamel and nothing applied for two minutes and rinsed off will reach it. So: if your teeth are stained, this will make them visibly lighter, sometimes strikingly so. If your teeth are clean and simply not as white as you would like, no Japanese toothpaste will change that, and anyone selling you one on that promise is selling you a disappointment. That is a bleaching treatment and it comes from a dentist.
One promise this page does not make: tartar removal. This line is often sold as three components that "ensure removal of plaque, tartar and bacteria". Plaque, yes — that is soft and a brush with the right paste lifts it. Tartar is different: it is plaque that has mineralised, it is hard, it is bonded to the tooth, and nothing in a tube removes it. It comes off with a scaler, in a dental chair. What a good paste does is remove plaque efficiently enough that less of it gets the chance to harden in the first place, which is prevention rather than removal, and that distinction is not pedantry — someone who believes their toothpaste is taking tartar off is someone who stops going for cleanings.
On the wording you will not find here. In Japan this is a 医薬部外品 — a quasi-drug — a middle category between a cosmetic and a medicine, with a fixed list of phrases a manufacturer is licensed to print. Translated literally into English those phrases become medicinal claims that are not approved anywhere else, which is how listings for Japanese toothpaste end up saying things like "therapeutic toothpaste", "kills pathogenic bacteria" and "prevention of periodontitis". A toothpaste sold as a cosmetic in the EU cannot claim to treat gum disease. This page instead describes what the product does mechanically and chemically, which is less impressive-sounding and considerably more useful.

How to Use
- Twice a day, morning and last thing at night. The night brushing does the most work, because saliva flow drops while you sleep.
- Spit, do not rinse. Rinsing with water straight after brushing washes the fluoride off the teeth before it has done anything. This is the single cheapest improvement most people can make to their brushing.
- A pea-sized amount on a soft brush. This is the amount the formulation is designed around.
- Two minutes across all surfaces, with extra time at the gum line where both plaque and stain gather.
- Light pressure. The stain work here is chemical; pressing harder only adds abrasion.
- If you use a mouthwash, use it at a different time of day rather than straight after brushing — rinsing the fluoride off with mouthwash is the same mistake as rinsing it off with water.

It removes the yellow film that settles into the microscopic texture of the enamel surface, which on a coffee or tea drinker usually shows within four to six weeks. It does not lighten the natural colour of the tooth. Japanese whitening pastes contain no peroxide — that colour comes from dentine under translucent enamel, and nothing you rinse out after two minutes reaches it. Bleaching is a dental treatment, and we would rather say so than let a tube carry a promise it cannot keep.
