A word on what 美白 (bihaku) means on a Japanese label. The approved claim is preventing spots and freckles caused by sun exposure, by limiting melanin production. It is not a claim to fade pigment that is already there, and the English word "whitening" does not change the skin's own colour. How to Use
- Cleanse, then prepare the skin with your usual toner.
- Open one sachet, unfold the sheet and lay it on the face, matching the eye and mouth openings.
- Smooth it down from the centre outwards so no air is trapped along the nose and jaw.
- Leave it on for the time on the pack, then lift the sheet off and discard it. Do not rinse.
- Press the remaining essence in with the palms, then seal with an emulsion or cream.
Frequency: KOSE sells this as a 5回分 pack — five uses. One or two sheets a week alongside daily sunscreen is the pattern the pack is built for; it is not a daily mask.

Other ingredients: purified water, 1,3-butylene glycol, concentrated glycerin, dipropylene glycol, clematis extract, meadowsweet (Filipendula) extract, horsetail (Equisetum) extract, English ivy (Hedera helix) extract, elder (Sambucus nigra) extract, seaweed extract (1), disodium EDTA, xanthan gum, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, sodium citrate, sodium metabisulfite, sodium phosphate monobasic, methylparaben.
KOSE's own suggestion, and one most translations leave out: the sealed sachet can be floated in a 40 °C bath for about five minutes to warm it, or chilled in the fridge. Warm for a winter evening, cold for a summer morning or after sun exposure.
Cautions
- For external use only. Avoid the eye area; if the product gets into the eyes, rinse at once with water or lukewarm water.
- Do not use on skin with wounds, swelling, eczema, sunburn or any other abnormality.
- Patch test before the first full-face use: apply a little to the inner forearm and leave it 24 hours.
- Stop using it and speak to a dermatologist if redness, swelling, itching, stinging or any other reaction appears during use or afterwards. Continuing can make it worse.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Close the pack after use and store away from direct sunlight, heat and damp.
- Contains sodium metabisulfite, a sulfite. If you react to sulfites — in wine, in dried fruit, or on a patch test — choose the vitamin C mask in the same line instead.
- Contains methylparaben, declared as a preservative in the essence.
- A quasi-drug is not a medicine. It prevents spots from spreading; it does not treat melasma or any diagnosed pigmentary condition, and oral tranexamic acid is a different thing entirely, prescribed by doctors.

FAQ
Will this fade the dark spots I already have?
No, and any page that says it will is overselling it. The Japanese 美白 claim these masks hold is prevention: limiting melanin production so that sun exposure produces fewer new spots and freckles. Existing pigment is a different problem, and the honest answers to it are time, sun avoidance, and in some cases a dermatologist.
Is this the same as the tranexamic acid tablets a doctor prescribes?
No. This is a topical quasi-drug: tranexamic acid in an essence, approved for preventing spots from spreading. Oral tranexamic acid is a prescription medicine with its own indications and its own risks, and nothing on this page applies to it. If you are taking it, or have been advised against it, that is a conversation with your doctor, not with a sheet mask.
Can I leave the mask on longer than the pack says?
No. Once the sheet starts to dry it takes moisture back off the skin instead of giving it. The time on the pack is the point at which to remove it, not a minimum.
Do I still need sunscreen?
Yes, and more than you need the mask. A 美白 active limits how much melanin the skin makes; sunscreen limits the UV that asks it to. Using the mask without daily sun protection is treating the symptom and leaving the cause running.
