Overview
Five pairs, five colours, one box. This is the standard Japanese answer to a household problem: everyone gets their own chopsticks and nobody has to work out whose is whose at the sink. The Japanese name says what it is — 食洗機対応 もちやすい木彫り箸 5膳セット, "dishwasher-safe, easy-to-hold carved chopsticks, set of five pairs".
The carving is not decoration. It runs along the grip so the pair does not roll off the table edge and does not turn in the hand halfway through a meal, and the tips carry a separate non-slip treatment. All five pairs are 23 cm, the general adult length. If someone in the house has small hands, this set will be slightly long for them — that is the trade-off of a single-length set. Choosing a length. The Japanese rule of thumb is issoku-hitomata: hold your hand with thumb and index finger at a right angle, measure between the two tips, and multiply by 1.5. For most adults that lands between 21 and 24 cm. 21 cm suits smaller hands, 23 cm is the general adult size, and if you are between the two, go longer — chopsticks that are slightly long are usable, chopsticks that are too short are not.

On the antibacterial treatment. In Japan a 抗菌 claim on household goods is tested against a standard method (JIS Z 2801 / ISO 22196) that measures whether bacteria applied to the surface fail to multiply on it. That is what it means. It does not sterilise, it does not clean, it does not make an unwashed pair safe, and it does not do anything about a virus. It is a modest additional margin on a shared utensil, and it is worth exactly that.
Cautions
- Not a toy. Keep away from children under three — chopsticks are a puncture hazard and a choking hazard.
- Never use in a microwave and never use to stir something on the heat.
- Do not leave soaking. Water sitting in the grain or under a lacquer edge is what lifts a finish.
- Dry before storing. Stored damp, wood chopsticks develop mould at the tip where you cannot see it.
- Stop using a pair once the coating chips or cracks — the exposed edge harbours food residue and can splinter.
- Keep away from direct sunlight, radiators and high humidity.
