Japanese Squalene — What It Is, Where It Comes From, and What We Will Not Claim
Overview
Squalene is a simple hydrocarbon that your own body already makes. It is one of the main components of human sebum, which is why it turns up in face oils and moisturisers, and it sits on the biochemical path that the body uses to build cholesterol and steroid hormones. The richest natural source is the liver oil of deep-water sharks, and Japan has refined and sold it as a food supplement since the middle of the last century.
This pack is a 60-day course: 360 soft capsules, with the manufacturer declaring 1,800 mg of squalene per six capsules.
Squalene is a food supplement and this page treats it as one. It is not a cancer treatment, it does not act against radiation, it does not chelate mercury or any other heavy metal, and it does not prevent diabetes or normalise blood pressure. What follows is what the manufacturer actually declares, what the ingredient is, who should not take it, and where the honest limits of the evidence sit.

Who Is This For?
- Adults already familiar with squalene who want a Japanese-refined version with the content declared per capsule
- People who prefer a defined 60-day course rather than an open-ended bottle
- Anyone who wants the marine-origin question answered before checkout rather than after delivery
- NOT for you if you have a fish or seafood allergy, or if you avoid animal-derived ingredients
- NOT for children, and not during pregnancy or breastfeeding without a doctor's agreement
How to Use
- The manufacturer's adult amount is 2 capsules three times a day — up to 6 capsules daily.
- Take them with or around a meal. Squalene is an oil and sits better on food.
- Swallow whole with water. Do not take the whole day's amount in one go.
- The manufacturer suggests running the supplement for one to three months at a time rather than continuously.
- If you take prescribed medication, space this at least two hours away from it and check with your pharmacist.
Frequency: Three times daily during a course. Manufacturer suggests one to three months at a time.
Full Ingredients
What the manufacturer declares: squalene 1,800 mg per 6 capsules, refined to a stated 99.6%, obtained from the liver oil of deep-water shark.
What the manufacturer does not publish, and we will not invent: the shark species; the composition of the capsule shell; any excipient, antioxidant or carrier oil in the fill. Soft capsules of this format are commonly gelatin-based, which is why we do not describe this product as vegetarian. If any of those points decides your purchase, ask us before ordering and we will photograph the Japanese panel on the stock we hold.
Origin, plainly: this is an animal product from a marine animal. It is not vegan and not vegetarian, and if you avoid shark-derived ingredients for conservation reasons, this is the point at which to stop reading rather than the point at which to be surprised.
Cautions
- Marine animal ingredient. Do not take it if you have a fish or seafood allergy. Not suitable for vegetarians or vegans.
- We do not recommend this for children, whatever dose the Japanese carton prints. If you are considering it for a child, that decision belongs with a paediatrician.
- Not for use in pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor agrees.
- Squalene is an oil taken at up to 6 capsules a day, so loose stools or stomach discomfort are the realistic side effects. Reduce the amount if that happens.
- If you take any prescribed medicine, especially a fat-soluble one, leave at least two hours between it and this supplement and check with your pharmacist.
- Shark liver products are not appropriate for anyone advised to avoid marine-derived supplements for medical or conservation reasons.
- Stop taking it and consult a doctor if you develop stomach upset, rash, unusual tiredness, muscle pain or dark urine.
- If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking any prescribed medication or under medical care, ask your doctor before starting this supplement.
- Do not exceed the stated daily amount. More is not better with any of these ingredients.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
- This is a food supplement, not a medicine. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, and it is not a substitute for prescribed treatment.

FAQ
Does squalene help with cancer, radiation or heavy metals?
No. Squalene is a food supplement. It is not a treatment for cancer, it does not protect against radiation, and it does not chelate mercury or any other heavy metal out of your body. If you are being treated for a serious illness, the only safe move is to ask your oncologist or specialist before adding any supplement, because some supplements interfere with treatment.
Is this halal?
We cannot tell you that it is. Shark is regarded as permissible seafood in most schools of Islamic jurisprudence, but the capsule shell is the open question: the manufacturer does not publish what it is made of, and soft capsules of this kind are commonly gelatin of unspecified animal origin. The product carries no halal certification. If certification or shell material matters to you, ask us before ordering and we will photograph the Japanese panel.
Why does the Japanese box list a children's dose when you say not for children?
Because Japanese food-supplement labelling conventions differ from ours and from most of our customers' national rules, and because we are the ones shipping it to you. We are not comfortable publishing a children's dose for a marine oil supplement on a page read in a dozen countries. The carton says what it says; our recommendation is adults only, and a paediatrician for anything else.
Is squalene the same as squalane in my face oil?
Nearly. Squalene is the natural, unsaturated form — the one in human sebum and in shark liver oil. Squalane is the hydrogenated version used in cosmetics because it does not oxidise as readily on a shelf or on skin. The cosmetic ingredient is now more often made from olives or sugarcane, which is one reason people are surprised to learn that the edible supplement version is usually still shark-derived.
How long should a course last?
The manufacturer suggests one to three months at a time rather than taking it year-round, and we would rather quote that than improvise a schedule. What we will not do is tell you how you should feel at the end of it. This is a supplement, not a treatment, and the honest answer to 'what will I notice' is that we do not know.
