By Natalia Tsujimoto, 23 years in Kobe, Japan · Updated June 2026
Every June, the same thing happens in Kobe: the rainy season breaks for a day, the sun comes out at full strength, and I see sunburned shoulders on the train by evening. Faces are protected — body skin is forgotten. Most people own one small tube of facial sunscreen and try to stretch it over arms, legs, neck, and chest. It never works, because a face-sized tube empties in three days when you use it properly on your body.
Japanese brands solved this problem years ago with dedicated body formats: large 90–140 g tubes, fast-spreading gels that cover a whole arm in seconds, and water-resistance ratings designed for real summer life — commuting, sports, beach days. After 23 years of Japanese summers, these are the eight body sunscreens I keep coming back to, all available in our sunscreen collection, shipped from our warehouse in Kobe.

What Makes Japanese Body Sunscreen Different
The PA system tells you about aging, not just burning
SPF measures protection against UVB — the rays that burn. The Japanese PA system (PA+ to PA++++) measures protection against UVA — the rays that age skin and deepen pigmentation. For body skin that spends hours in indirect sun, UVA protection matters more than most people think. Nearly every pick below carries PA++++, the highest rating. If you want the full explanation, I wrote a separate guide: Understanding SPF and PA in Japanese Sunscreens.
Water resistance is actually tested
Japanese labels are specific about water resistance. Shiseido's flagship Anessa gel, for example, states a passed 80-minute water-resistance test — not a vague "water resistant" stamp. At the same time, almost all of these formulas rinse off with regular soap, so you are not scrubbing at the end of the day.
Textures designed for large areas
Western body sunscreens tend to be thick creams. Japanese body formats are watery gels, milks, and essences that spread quickly, leave no white cast, and do not stick to clothing. When applying sunscreen to your body feels pleasant, you actually reapply — and reapplication is what saves your skin.

1. Best overall — Shiseido Anessa Perfect UV Skincare Gel NB 90g (2026 formula)
The 2026 reformulation of Japan's most famous sunscreen line, and my default body sunscreen from June to September. Anessa Perfect UV Skincare Gel NB is SPF50+ PA++++ with a passed 80-minute water-resistance test, and the new Auto Moist Balance Technology adapts hydration as humidity swings — which in a Japanese summer is constantly.
What makes Anessa special is that sweat and heat make it work better, not worse: the Auto Booster technology binds the UV film tighter to skin on contact with sweat, water, and heat. The gel itself feels cool and weightless, leaves no white cast, and carries skincare ingredients — hyaluronic acid, soluble collagen, and glutamic acid — alongside Shiseido's Beauty Sun Essence with purple tea and Satsuma mandarin extracts. Shiseido describes the formula as ocean-friendly. For sports days, the classic Anessa Perfect UV Skincare Milk is the pocket-sized alternative built for friction, heat, and humidity.
2. Best value big tube — Skin Aqua Super Moisture UV Gel 140g
If your household goes through sunscreen quickly, this is the answer. Skin Aqua Super Moisture UV Gel 140g is the biggest tube in this guide — SPF50+ PA++++ in a gel that Rohto describes as light as water. It contains three types of hyaluronic acid, uses Light Endurance NEO capsule UV filters, and is fragrance-free, dye-free, mineral-oil-free, and paraben-free.
Despite being water-resistant, it washes off with regular soap. The generous 140 g size means nobody in the family "saves" sunscreen — and generous application is the whole game. There is also a 110 g version of the same formula if you want a slightly smaller tube.
3. Best long-wear — ALLIE Chrono Beauty Gel UV EX 90g
Kanebo's ALLIE Chrono Beauty Gel UV EX is the one I recommend for long outdoor days — festivals, hiking, a full day at the park with kids. SPF50+/PA++++ in a watery gel that dries to a genuinely non-greasy finish and holds through sweat and water. ALLIE has been a leading Japanese UV brand for years, and many of my customers in Kobe are loyal to its lighter skin feel. If Anessa feels a touch too rich on your skin in peak humidity, try this.
4. Best tone-up for décolleté and shoulders — Anessa Brightening UV Gel NA 90g
Anessa Brightening UV Gel NA does two jobs: SPF50+ PA++++ protection and an instant lavender-pink tone-up that visually corrects dullness and yellow undertones — lovely on shoulders, chest, and arms when you wear summer dresses. It is a medicated quasi-drug formula (医薬部外品) with m-tranexamic acid, which Shiseido says helps support an even, brighter-looking complexion, plus tea leaf extract, soluble collagen, and hyaluronic acid derivatives for comfort.
Two honest notes: its water resistance is rated at 40 minutes — half of the NB gel — so it is a city formula, not a swimming formula. And as with any medicated product, keep it away from your eyes.
5. Best under clothes and makeup — Kose Suncut UV Gel 120g
Kose Suncut Water-Resistant Sunscreen Gel is the quiet workhorse of Japanese drugstores: SPF50+ PA++++, a generous 120 g tube, and a lightweight gel that works on both face and body and sits well under makeup. Kose adds hyaluronic acid, collagen, and plant extracts for hydration, and it rinses off with regular soap. This is the one I keep by the front door for the thirty-second full-body application before leaving the house.
6. Best lightweight essence — Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence 70g
The cult classic. Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence spreads into a thin, even film that feels like a second skin — if you hate the feeling of wearing sunscreen, start here. SPF50+ PA++++, Super Waterproof by Kao's labeling yet soap-washable, free of synthetic dyes, and comfortable enough that the brand positions it as a makeup base too. The 70 g size is right for one person's summer month.
7. Best without chemical filters — Ryu Spa Resort UV Face and Body
For sensitive skin, Ryu Spa Resort UV from Okinawa is the gentle option: a milk that uses only mineral filters — zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — with no chemical UV absorbers, no fragrance, and no dyes. The brand states the formula is safe for coral. The skincare side is genuinely interesting: deep sea water drawn from 612 meters off Kumejima Island, mozuku seaweed extract (fucoidan), red algae, aloe vera, licorice root, and a stable vitamin C derivative.
One honest caveat: the product page does not state a numeric SPF rating, so I treat it as gentle daily protection for sensitive skin — errands, walks, office days — rather than a beach-marathon sunscreen.
8. Best for kids — Kao Biore Kids Milk SPF50 PA+++ 70ml
Designed for children's skin: Biore Kids Milk is SPF50 PA+++, water- and sweat-resistant, with shea oil for moisture and a clever ingredient that keeps sand from sticking to skin at the beach or sandbox. It is alcohol-free, fragrance-free, dye-free, and paraben-free, and washes off with regular soap at bath time — no special cleanser battles with a tired child. My customers with small kids reorder this one every summer.
How to Apply Enough Sunscreen to Your Body
Most sunscreen "failures" are really application failures. The industry-standard testing dose is 2 mg per square centimeter of skin — far more than most people use. In practice:
Use roughly half a teaspoon per limb section: one for each forearm, each upper arm, each thigh, each calf, and one each for chest, abdomen, upper back, and lower back. A 90 g tube used correctly on the body lasts about two to three weeks of daily wear — if yours lasts all summer, you are underdosing.
Reapply every two hours in direct sun, and immediately after swimming or heavy sweating regardless of the water-resistance rating. Even an 80-minute tested formula like Anessa NB needs topping up after a long swim. And do not forget the spots everyone misses: ears, back of the neck, tops of feet, and behind the knees.
Finally, do a patch test when trying any new sunscreen — apply a small amount to your inner arm for a day or two before going full-body, especially if your skin is reactive.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use body sunscreen on my face?
Usually yes — several picks here, like Kose Suncut, Biore Aqua Rich, and Ryu Spa Resort UV, are explicitly labeled for face and body. The reverse is the real problem: facial tubes are too small and too expensive to dose a whole body properly.
Are these sunscreens safe during pregnancy?
Most picks here are regular cosmetics. Anessa Brightening NA is a medicated quasi-drug with m-tranexamic acid, and my general advice for any medicated (quasi-drug) product is simple: if you are pregnant or nursing, show the product to your doctor before adding it to your routine.
Are Japanese body sunscreens reef-safe?
"Reef-safe" has no single legal definition, so I only repeat what brands actually state: Shiseido describes the 2026 Anessa NB gel as ocean-friendly, and Ryu Spa Resort UV states its mineral formula is safe for coral. The other picks make no marine claims, so I make none for them.
What does "waterproof" actually mean on Japanese labels?
Japanese brands typically state a tested water-resistance duration — Anessa NB passes an 80-minute test, Anessa NA is rated for 40 minutes. "Super Waterproof" formulas like Biore Aqua Rich resist sweat and water but still rinse off with soap. Whatever the rating, reapply after swimming. More detail in our SPF and PA guide.
Do these contain animal-derived ingredients?
Some do: the Anessa gels, Kose Suncut, and Ryu Spa Resort UV list soluble collagen, whose source is not specified on the product pages. None of these products carry halal certification. If ingredient sourcing matters to you for religious or ethical reasons, please review the full ingredient list on each product page or contact us before ordering.
Final Thoughts
Sun damage on the body is slower to show than on the face — and much harder to undo once it does. The fix is not discipline; it is owning a body-sized sunscreen you actually enjoy applying. For most people I recommend starting with the Anessa Perfect UV Gel NB for serious days and the Skin Aqua 140g as the generous everyday tube by the door.
