By Natalia Tsujimoto, living in Kobe, Japan since 2002. October 2026.
Every December my inbox fills with the same question in six languages: "What should I send from Japan as a present?" Christmas is not a gift-giving holiday here in the way it is in Europe. What Japan does have is a deep culture of giving small, well-chosen things: omiyage from a trip, seasonal gifts in summer and winter, a present that shows you paid attention. That habit shapes the products themselves. Japanese brands think about the box, the size and the moment it is opened, not only about the formula inside.
This guide is the list I would give a friend. Nine gifts from our shelves in Kobe, sorted by the person you are buying for rather than by category, with three ready-made parcels over ¥25,000 and the practical shipping details at the end. I have only included things I can describe honestly, and I will tell you who each one is not for.
What Makes a Good Gift From Japan
Choose the person first, then the product
Skincare is personal. A serum that suits your sister may not suit your colleague, and an active treatment is a strange present for someone you do not know well. The safest beauty gifts are the ones that work as a complete experience: a full routine in one box, a tool that makes a daily habit nicer, or a ritual someone can try once and enjoy. That is why most of this list is kits, tools and small pleasures rather than single bottles of strong actives.
Kits and tools travel better than one big bottle
A kit gives the person a whole routine to try, and a tool like a brush lasts for years. Both arrive in their Japanese retail packaging, exactly as they are sold in Japan. We ship them in that domestic packaging, so the box your friend opens is the box a shopper in Tokyo would take home.
Order earlier than you think
Many products in our store are bought for you in Japan after you place the order, and processing takes 2–6 business days before dispatch. Add international transit and the busy December post, and a gift ordered in December is a gamble. I explain the dates in the shipping section below.
9 Japanese Gift Ideas for Christmas 2026
1. For the skincare lover: Shiseido Ultimune Essential Kit
If you want one gift that feels generous, this is it. The Shiseido Ultimune Essential Kit is a limited-edition set of three full-size steps: Eudermine Essence Lotion (70 ml), the Ultimune serum (30 ml, full size) and Essential Energy Hydrating Cream (30 g). Shiseido builds it around its "red circulation" concept of activation, protection and restoration, with fermented rice extracts, the Ultimune complex, hyaluronic acid, botanical extracts and stable vitamin C.
It is a complete routine rather than three unrelated products, which is exactly what makes it a good present: the person does not need to know anything about layering to use it. Shiseido positions it for skin that looks tired, dull or dehydrated.
Best for: someone who already enjoys skincare and would appreciate a prestige Japanese brand in full sizes.
2. For someone new to Japanese skincare: Shiseido Beauty Flow 3-Step Trial Kit
The Shiseido Beauty Flow 3-Step Trial Kit is the same three-step system in a limited-edition travel format: lotion 30 ml, serum 15 ml and cream 15 g. It is the gift I suggest when you are not sure about the person's skin. They get to try a full Japanese routine without committing to full-size bottles, and the small sizes fit a weekend bag.
Best for: a friend curious about Japanese skincare, a Secret Santa with a higher budget, or a frequent traveler.
3. For the hair-care enthusiast: Tokio Inkarami Platinum Set
Japanese salon hair care is a category many people have heard about and never tried. The Tokio Inkarami Platinum shampoo and treatment set (400 ml + 400 g) is built around a reactive keratin complex that works on the hair during the treatment step, with fullerene, an amino acid complex, meadowfoam-δ-lactone to help protect against heat-styling damage, and ceramide NG. It smells of grapefruit and lemongrass.
Tokio Inkarami recommends it for hair damaged by coloring, bleaching or frequent heat styling. The large sizes make it a real gift rather than a sample, and it is easy to use: shampoo, then treatment on the lengths for two to three minutes, rinse.
Best for: anyone who colors their hair or uses a straightener or curling iron most days.
4. For the person who has everything: S·HEART·S World Premium Scalp Brush
This is my favorite "they would never buy it for themselves" gift. The S·HEART·S World Premium Short Scalp Brush is the premium tier of the range: 572 round-tipped nylon pins set at stepped heights so they follow the curve of the head, a short handle made for the shower, and an anti-slip stopper for wet, soapy hands. It is made in Japan and comes with the brand's Beauty Book and a one-year warranty.
It turns a two-minute shampoo into something that feels like a head massage. It is a beauty tool, not a treatment, and I would not give it with any promise about hair growth.
Best for: partners, parents and friends who are hard to buy for. Browse more in our Japanese scalp brushes collection, or read the Japanese hair care routine guide to see where it fits.
5. For the makeup lover: Kumano Makeup Brush Set With Case
Kumano, in Hiroshima, is Japan's most famous brush-making region. The Kumano makeup brush set brings together five brushes, each shaped for one job (face, eyeshadow, lips, brows and blush), in a slim black case for travel. A good brush set is a gift that lasts for years and gets used every morning.
One honest note: these are natural animal-hair brushes. The face brush is mountain goat hair, the eyeshadow and lip brushes are weasel hair, and the brow and blush brushes are horsehair. If the person is vegan or avoids animal-derived products, choose another gift from this list.
Best for: someone who wears makeup daily and prefers soft natural-hair brushes for powders. See all options in Japanese makeup brushes.
6. For dry winter skin: LuLuLun Toner Pad Set
The LuLuLun Toner Pad Set holds two tubs of 50 pads that do opposite jobs. Wipe-Off goes first and lifts away dead skin, excess oil and cleansing residue, a soft alternative to a scrub. Moisture-ON is pressed onto a dry patch (cheeks, around the mouth, under the eyes) and left there like a small sheet mask. It carries five ceramides, fermented rice bran extract and adzuki bean seed extract, with a sweet orange scent.
Toner pads are a category Korean brands built, and this is one of the few Japanese versions. It makes a fun, low-risk present because it does not replace anyone's routine; it slots into it.
Best for: friends with dry or flaky patches in winter, and anyone who likes quick five-minute rituals.
7. For a bedtime ritual after the holidays: Honpo Legs Sheet (Lavender)
A small, very Japanese gift. Honpo Legs Sheet is a jueki sheet (樹液シート): an adhesive pad of wood vinegar powder and bamboo vinegar powder that you stick to the sole before sleep and peel off in the morning. This version has lavender oil and a soft lavender scent. One box holds 30 sheets, enough for 15 nights for both feet.
I describe it as what it is: a bedtime ritual, not a treatment. The pad turns brown overnight because the wood vinegar reacts with warmth and moisture, not because it draws anything out of the body. If you would like the full story, I wrote a separate guide to Honpo foot patches.
Best for: parents, frequent flyers and anyone who spends the holidays on their feet.
8. For the family table: Ohashi Koujou Carved Chopsticks, 5 Pairs
Not every gift from Japan has to be beauty. The Ohashi Koujou carved chopsticks set is five pairs in five colors, azure, young-leaf green, pale indigo, peach blossom and golden yellow, so everyone at the table has their own. The carved grip stops the pair rolling off the table, the tips have a non-slip finish, and they are dishwasher-safe. All five pairs are 23 cm, the general adult length.
Best for: a family, a couple who loves Japanese food, or a host gift for a Christmas dinner. More in Japanese kitchen products.
9. Stocking stuffer: KOSÉ Coenrich Medicated Whitening Hand Cream
Every gift list needs one small thing you can buy several of. The KOSÉ Coenrich Medicated Whitening Hand Cream (80 g) is a Japanese quasi-drug with tranexamic acid as its declared active, approved to help prevent dark spots and freckles on the hands. It also contains concentrated coenzyme Q10 and three occlusive oils, and it includes nail and hangnail care. The tube is the size that lives in a handbag.
Best for: colleagues, teachers, and anyone whose hands get dry in winter. For more options, see my best Japanese hand creams guide.
Gift Parcels Over ¥25,000
Shipping from Japan is calculated by weight and destination, so one parcel with several gifts is better value than several small orders. Orders from ¥25,000 qualify for free Air Mail shipping; the exact option for your country appears at checkout. These are combinations I would put into one box, at current store prices.
| Parcel | What is in it | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Skincare night in | Shiseido Ultimune Essential Kit (¥19,800) + LuLuLun Toner Pad Set (¥6,200) | ¥26,000 |
| Salon hair at home | Tokio Inkarami Platinum Set (¥19,000) + S·HEART·S World Premium Scalp Brush (¥9,900) | ¥28,900 |
| Something for everyone | Shiseido Beauty Flow Trial Kit (¥9,940) + Kumano Brush Set (¥9,600) + Honpo Legs Sheet (¥2,800) + Ohashi Koujou Chopsticks (¥2,800) + KOSÉ Coenrich Hand Cream (¥1,000) | ¥26,140 |
The third parcel is my favorite for a family: five presents for five people, in one box from Japan.
Christmas Shipping From Japan: What to Know
- Order dates. For delivery before Christmas, please order by 20 November for Air Mail and by 1 December for EMS. December post is slow everywhere, so earlier is always safer.
- Processing. Orders are processed in 2–6 business days, and you receive a tracking number after dispatch.
- United States. Import duties are prepaid and included in your order total, so there is nothing to pay on delivery (orders up to $800).
- Other countries. Import duties and taxes may apply depending on the destination country.
- Returns. Opened cosmetics cannot be returned for hygiene and safety reasons, so for skincare choose the kit that best matches the person.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good Japanese beauty gift for someone I do not know well?
Choose something that does not depend on skin type: a tool such as the S·HEART·S scalp brush, a ritual like the Honpo Legs Sheet, or a hand cream. Active skincare is better kept for people whose skin you know.
Are these products the Japanese versions?
Yes. We buy them in Japan and ship them from Kobe in their Japanese domestic packaging, exactly as they are sold in Japan.
When should I order Japanese gifts for Christmas?
Order by 20 November for Air Mail and by 1 December for EMS. Many items are bought for you after you order, and processing takes 2–6 business days before dispatch.
Is the Kumano brush set vegan?
No. It uses natural animal hair: mountain goat for the face brush, weasel for the eyeshadow and lip brushes, and horsehair for the brow and blush brushes.
Can I get free shipping on a gift order?
Orders from ¥25,000 qualify for free Air Mail shipping, and checkout shows the exact option for your country. The three parcels above are all over that amount.
Final Thoughts
The best gifts from Japan are not the most expensive ones. They are the ones that show you thought about the person: a full Shiseido routine for the friend who loves skincare, a scalp brush for the partner who has everything, five pairs of chopsticks for the family table. Choose by person, order early, and put several presents in one parcel.
