Overview

A cream-format face wash rather than a ready-made foam: you whip it in your hands with a little water and it builds into a dense, elastic lather that holds its shape. The point of a lather that stiff is that it sits between your hands and your face, so you clean without rubbing. It is a potassium-soap formula, which rinses very cleanly, and the humectants left in the base are there to offset the tightness a soap wash can leave.

AGTHEORY is built around what AXXZIA calls the Toka Complex (糖花コンプレックス, "sugar-flower complex"): eleven plant ingredients led by Alpine Rose (Rhododendron ferrugineum) extract, horse chestnut seed extract and plantain seed extract. The name is a play on 糖化 (glycation), the sugar-and-protein reaction the whole series is positioned around, and the same eleven botanicals run through every product in the line.

How to Use

1. Wet your face and hands with lukewarm water
2. Squeeze roughly 3 cm of cream into your palm
3. Add a little water and work it between both hands until the foam is dense and holds its shape
4. Place the foam on the face and move it in gentle circles — let the lather do the work rather than your fingers
5. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and press dry with a soft towel

FAQ

Does the pineapple extract exfoliate?

We would not buy it for that. Ananas sativus fruit extract sits low in the list, and this is a wash that spends under a minute on the face before being rinsed away. Fruit extract is also not the same thing as a standardised bromelain preparation. If you want exfoliation, use a product designed and dosed for it.

Can I use it as my only morning cleanse?

Yes. In the morning there is nothing to remove but overnight sebum and the residue of last night's skincare, and one wash handles that. Save the Deep Cleansing Gel for evenings.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

It is a soap cleanser, which means an alkaline pH. Plenty of people use these without any trouble, but if your skin is dry, reactive or barrier-compromised, a low-pH synthetic cleanser is usually the kinder choice. Patch test first.

How does it compare with the rest of the line?
