Overview

The lighter of the line's two moisturisers: a milky emulsion that spreads thinly, sinks in quickly and does not leave a layer you can feel. It is the sealing step — it holds down the water from the toner and the essence rather than adding much of its own.

This is also the only product in the AGTHEORY line that contains rosehip. Rosa canina fruit oil appears here and nowhere else, which is worth knowing if rosehip is what brought you to the brand — other pages in the line have described the Toka Complex as containing rosehip, and it does not. Its lead botanical is Alpine Rose, a different plant entirely.

AGTHEORY is built around what AXXZIA calls the Toka Complex (糖花コンプレックス, "sugar-flower complex"): eleven plant ingredients led by Alpine Rose (Rhododendron ferrugineum) extract, horse chestnut seed extract and plantain seed extract. The name is a play on 糖化 (glycation), the sugar-and-protein reaction the whole series is positioned around, and the same eleven botanicals run through every product in the line.

• Rosehip is what you were looking for in this line: this is the product that has it
• Your skin is normal to dry and a full cream feels like too much most of the year
• Choose the Rich Cream instead if your skin is very dry, or layer this under it in winter
• Fragranced. Rosehip oil also divides opinion on acne-prone skin — patch test if that applies to you

How to Use

1. After the toner and the oil essence, dispense one to two pumps into the palm
2. Warm it briefly between both hands
3. Press it on starting at the cheeks, then forehead, nose and chin
4. Take whatever is left on your palms down over the neck
5. In the morning, let it settle before sunscreen; in the evening, follow with the gel mask or cream if you use one

Rosa Canina Fruit Oil is fruit oil, not seed oil. The two are pressed from different parts of the same plant and are not interchangeable.

FAQ

Emulsion or Rich Cream — which do I need?

The emulsion is the lighter one and suits most skin most of the year, especially under makeup and in warm weather. The Rich Cream is considerably denser and is for dry or mature skin, or for winter. In very dry conditions you can use both: emulsion first, cream on top.

Is the rosehip here the same thing as rosehip seed oil?

No, and the distinction matters. This is Rosa canina *fruit* oil. Rosehip *seed* oil is a different pressing from the same plant and is the one usually discussed in connection with vitamin A precursors. We are not going to claim retinoid-like effects for a fruit oil.

So the Toka Complex does not contain rosehip?

It does not. The complex is led by Alpine Rose (Rhododendron ferrugineum), an alpine shrub. If you came to the line looking for rosehip, this emulsion is the product — see also our Japanese face creams for other options.

Can I use it on the neck and décolletage?

Yes. Take what is left on your palms after the face and press it down over the neck. There is no separate formulation needed.
