Overview

Japanese toners are usually thin and applied in several layers. This one is not: it pours with the weight of a serum, which is the whole argument for it. One pressed layer does the work you would otherwise do in five or six, and it is meant to be pressed in with the palms rather than swept on with a cotton pad — a pad would soak up a good deal of a 100 mL bottle.

AGTHEORY is built around what AXXZIA calls the Toka Complex (糖花コンプレックス, "sugar-flower complex"): eleven plant ingredients led by Alpine Rose (Rhododendron ferrugineum) extract, horse chestnut seed extract and plantain seed extract. The name is a play on 糖化 (glycation), the sugar-and-protein reaction the whole series is positioned around, and the same eleven botanicals run through every product in the line.

How to Use

1. After cleansing, pour a coin-sized pool — roughly the diameter of a ¥500 coin — into clean palms
2. Press your palms together for a moment to warm it
3. Press it into the face in sections: cheeks first, then forehead, nose and chin
4. Pat lightly until it has sunk in; the finish should be soft, not tacky
5. Add a second application on any area that still feels tight, then move on to the next step

FAQ

Hands or a cotton pad?

Hands. The texture is too heavy for a pad to distribute evenly, a pad absorbs a meaningful share of what you pour, and dragging cotton across the face is friction you do not need. Warm it briefly between the palms and press it in.

Is this enough on its own, or do I still need a serum?

For a short routine it is enough as the hydrating step. If you want the full sequence, follow with the Balancing Oil Essence, then either the Silky Emulsion or the Rich Cream depending on how dry your skin is.

Is it fragrance-free?

No. Fragrance is the last ingredient on the list. If fragrance in skincare is a problem for you, this is not the toner to try — browse the rest of our Japanese toners and lotions instead.

How long will a 100 mL bottle last?

At a ¥500-coin pool twice a day, expect roughly six to eight weeks. Using cotton pads would cut that considerably, which is a second reason to apply with the hands.
