AGTHEORY is built around what AXXZIA calls the Toka Complex (糖花コンプレックス, "sugar-flower complex"): eleven plant ingredients led by Alpine Rose (Rhododendron ferrugineum) extract, horse chestnut seed extract and plantain seed extract. The name is a play on 糖化 (glycation), the sugar-and-protein reaction the whole series is positioned around, and the same eleven botanicals run through every product in the line.

How to Use

1. Start with a dry face and dry hands — do not wet either first
2. Take about a 1.5–2 cm line of gel and spread it over the whole face
3. Massage in small circles, spending a little longer on the T-zone and on eye and lip makeup
4. Wet your fingertips and keep massaging: the gel turns milky as it emulsifies
5. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, then follow with a foaming wash if you want a full double cleanse

Does it take off waterproof mascara and eyeliner?

Yes, but press rather than rub. Hold the gel over closed eyes for a few seconds to let the oil phase soften the makeup, then move it gently and rinse. The skin around the eye is the thinnest on the face and does not tolerate scrubbing.

Do I need a second cleanse afterwards?

Is the Toka Complex the same as rosehip?

No, and this is worth being clear about. The lead botanical is Alpine Rose (Rhododendron ferrugineum), an alpine shrub — not rosehip (Rosa canina). Within this line, rosehip oil appears only in the Silky Emulsion. If rosehip is what you are shopping for, that is the product you want.

Can I use it on acne-prone skin?

It is soap-free and rinses without residue, which generally suits combination skin. We cannot promise it will suit acne-prone skin — responses to cleansing oils vary a great deal. Patch test, and speak to a dermatologist if your skin is under treatment.
