Overview

A gel you put on last thing at night and leave there. Nothing to rinse, nothing to peel off, no timer — you wash it away with your morning cleanse. The gel network holds water against the skin for the hours you are asleep, which is longer than any rinse-off mask gets and is the whole reason to buy a leave-on one.

Alongside the Toka Complex it carries two Japanese botanicals that appear nowhere else in the line: ume plum fruit extract and phellodendron (Amur cork tree) bark extract.

AGTHEORY is built around what AXXZIA calls the Toka Complex (糖花コンプレックス, "sugar-flower complex"): eleven plant ingredients led by Alpine Rose (Rhododendron ferrugineum) extract, horse chestnut seed extract and plantain seed extract. The name is a play on 糖化 (glycation), the sugar-and-protein reaction the whole series is positioned around, and the same eleven botanicals run through every product in the line.

How to Use

1. Finish your usual evening routine — cleanse, toner, essence, emulsion or cream
2. Take a pearl to hazelnut-sized amount as the very last step
3. Press it thinly and evenly over the face and neck
4. Leave it on. Do not rinse before bed
5. In the morning, rinse with lukewarm water as part of your normal cleanse

Cyanocobalamin is vitamin B12. It is also intensely pink, and in Japanese formulation it frequently does double duty as the colourant — which is why you may see a faint tint in the jar.

FAQ

Do I rinse it off before bed?

No — that is the point of it. Apply it as the last step, sleep in it, and rinse it away with your morning cleanse. If you rinse it off at night you have bought an ordinary mask at a leave-on price.

Instead of my night cream, or on top of it?

Either. On normal or combination skin in warm weather the gel alone is usually enough. On dry skin or in winter, apply the Silky Emulsion or the Rich Cream first and seal with the gel.

Why is there vitamin B12 in a face mask?

Cyanocobalamin has a place in cosmetic formulation, but we would not oversell it: it is a vivid pink compound and in Japanese products it is very often serving as the colourant as much as anything else. Its position near the end of the list is consistent with that.

Can I use it as a daytime mask?

You can leave it on for twenty to thirty minutes and rinse, but it is formulated for overnight wear and that is where it earns its keep. Browse our Japanese skincare if you want a rinse-off treatment mask instead.
