Overview
SPF50+ / PA++++ — the highest ratings issued under the Japanese system, and water-resistant. It is a sunscreen first and a make-up base second: fine pearl gives a soft tone-up that takes the edge off pores and unevenness, so for many people it replaces a separate primer.
The filter set is broad. Six organic filters — including two Tinosorb-class triazines and avobenzone — with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, plus cerium oxide, and AXXZIA also formulates it against blue light from screens and near-infrared. Protection against those last two is far less standardised than SPF and PA, so treat it as a reasonable extra rather than as a number you can compare.
AGTHEORY is built around what AXXZIA calls the Toka Complex (糖花コンプレックス, "sugar-flower complex"): eleven plant ingredients led by Alpine Rose (Rhododendron ferrugineum) extract, horse chestnut seed extract and plantain seed extract. The name is a play on 糖化 (glycation), the sugar-and-protein reaction the whole series is positioned around, and the same eleven botanicals run through every product in the line.

The heavy lifting is done by the organic filters near the top of the list. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide sit much lower and contribute to coverage and finish rather than carrying the SPF on their own — this is not a mineral sunscreen.

- Apply the full amount. Using less than about a ¥10 coin for the face gives you less protection than SPF50+

- Remove thoroughly at the end of the day; a water-resistant sunscreen needs an oil-based first cleanse

FAQ
What is the SPF and PA rating?
SPF50+ and PA++++. SPF50+ is the top of the Japanese UVB scale and PA++++ the top of the UVA scale, so on both counts this is as high as a Japanese sunscreen is rated. It is also water-resistant.
Is it a mineral sunscreen?
No. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are present but sit well down the list; the protection comes chiefly from the organic filters near the top — ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, octocrylene, avobenzone, ethylhexyl triazone and two triazines. If you need a mineral-only formula, look through our Japanese sunscreens for one that says so.
Will it leave a white cast or make me look shiny?
It contains fine pearl (mica) and is designed to give a soft tone-up, so it does shift the complexion slightly — that is the intended finish, not a fault. It is subtle rather than a strong brightening base. If you want no colour effect at all, this is not the one.
How do I take it off?
With an oil-based cleanse. A water-resistant SPF is built to stay put through perspiration, which means a foaming wash alone will not shift all of it. The AGTHEORY Deep Cleansing Gel is the matching first step.
